Not sure about STT, but I found that most places on St John took credit cards, and this included some small places that I didn't expect to take credit cards. Same was true for St Croix. I think maybe Visa and MasterCharge are preferred, but a number did take Amer Exp too. So, I expect most places on STT, since it is the more touristy of the USVIs, probably take credit cards.

It's been my experience over the last X years that M/C and Visa are more widely accepted than AmEx (due to the cost to the retailer of AmEx) and Discover is almost never (not entirely, but almost) accepted. If you use a Visa or M/C, however, you will find that it is gladly accepted in many retailers, restaurants, bars and excursions.

THAT'S what it was...Discover!! I thought I heard something a while back about a certain credit card that was not accepted!

We are bringing the American Express as a back up card...so we may not even have to use it.

Thanks!

I used my AE down in St Thomas but mainly my Visa's or Master card. A word to the user make sure before you go to call your credit card company & let them know you are going as they might refuse your charge no matter how small it is. This happen to me when I when in November of 2005,. I used my United Visa as it had a zero balance I went to charge & I was told it wasn't accepted. The store let me talk to them & they said it because it was outside the U. S. & they thought the card was stolen etc. I said no I was down in St Thomas so I had to tell them how long I would be there for. They told me if I ever travel outside of where I live or outside the states to call them. When I used my Citi Card no problem go figure. Now when my husband went to Yemen he used AE no worries but the guy traveling with him was denied for the same reason I was. So husband let him check in on his card until he could call the credit card company. I know a pain but in the end worth it. MHO

I'm laughing at this, as I am currently traveling in Taiwan and Hong Kong for work, and I've never once had a problem with a credit card. I've never had to call to warn them. They always accept the charge.

🙂

LOL Laugh away. Do you check for unwanted charges? Is it business card? Do you go travel a great deal? If so the card know where you normally travel to. AE accept nearly all the charges right or wrong. I rather have to call them to let them know when & where I am going. They always have my back for unwanted charges. These days one just have to have the number & charge up your card. Why do you think is so funny because you are lucky yours never was question? MHO

We always used Visa in St Thomas and St John and even on a trip to BVI. Never had a problem and never had to call the company first.

We have traveled all over Europe and Hong Kong several times and always used both Amer Exp. & Visa. Never had a problem. Last yr. in STT I used my visa at 2 stores within hrs. of each other. At the airport in Miami, 2 days later I went to get some money out of the ATM, in case we got delayed and it was denied. When I got home and called Visa they said they had put a hold on my card because the charges were not in my reg. pattern. They said always notify them if we are traveling. It was a good thing we did not get stranded somewhere and not be able to access any money. LOL It is not funny when it happens to you.

We had the same problem a few years ago on a cruise. We have never called a CC company or bank before any of our other prior trips ( Europe and the Caribbean), but for some reason, this time it sent up a red flag. The bank said that we should always call; we have ever since and have never had a problem.
Better safe than sorry.

i had no problem using my visa or mastercard. only thing was on st. john when i tried to buy something in a little shop, they wouldn't let me charge anything less than $20. Of course, what i wanted to buy was less than $20 and i really wanted it so i tossed in a couple cheapy things to get over $20. didn't have this problem in STT.

I live on St. John...mailing address for my credit card is on St. John, so I was very surprised when we went to STT for a shopping trip, and my credit card was denied at Cost-U-Less, and then at Home Depot they had to call for authorization. I spoke to the credit card company representative on the phone while we were at Home Depot, and she asked me, "what is St. Thomas?" Better safe than sorry...it never hurts to call ahead so you don't have to deal with being denied or having to go through authorization.
