Did you drink wine during your visit to the V.I.?

Did you bring wine with you in your suitcase?

Did you drink wine in a restaurant?

Did you buy wine from a store in the V.I. and drink it during your stay?

Did you purchase wine in the V.I. and bring it back with you?

I drink a glass of red wine every evening with dinner. However for some reason I rarely drink it while visiting St. John. Is it just me?

I usually have white wine in the evening at home . In St. Croix, I drink less wine, but more beer and rum punches. I like Sam Adams, but most places don't have it. I had Blackbeard's Ale at Tutto Bene and it was very good. My wife had chardonnay at several restaurants with a variety of results - none were bad, but none were really good except at Bacchus which has very good wines. I had a rum punch at H2O that was awful, everywhere else they were delicious. We have never taken wine with us or brought any back home. We did buy wine at the Schooner Bay Market and also at Just In Case Deli (near the Reefs) and it was fine. For some reason beer tasted much better to me than wine in St. Croix.

I never drink wine but my wife enjoys it at times...but never in the VI.

While in the VI we stick to Cruzan Rum or Carib beer. 🙂

I do take rum home with me.

I'll be getting back to ya'll on this one. There is an idea we will implement once our plans are coming togeather. I was told by a very suspicious person not to share these ideas at this time, until they are being implemented. So I'll follow the advice. AJ, keep me on an email list so I don't forget to report back!

I never bring wine with me to the VI. I always buy it on island. Prefer a gin and tonic during cocktail time in the cockpit of our boat but always have wine with dinner.
Also love to have a mimosa for a special breakfast on the boat. Sometimes will have a beer with lunch but really prefer iced tea or water when we are out sailing. Now I have a question-why do you want to know?????

My wife is a dedicated white wine drinker. She both buys wine on St Croix and orders it with her dinner.

Wine prices aren't that good on STX, but we have never brought any wine with us or taken any back stateside.

I find myself drinking more cocktails on STX vs straight single malt scotch.

I mentioned earlier that I have a glass of red every evening.

In addition, I can be found either on Friday or Saturday night at a wine bar in downtown Orlando.

Yet for some reason I don't even think about wine while visiting St. John. It struck me as odd so I wondered if other people who normally drink wine experienced the same lack of desire when in the V.I.

Has anyone tried the new champagne in a can from Coppola?
I usually don't like his wines, but I have to say I'm intrigued. Comes in singles or a 4-pack box ($5 for the single, $20 for the 4-pack) -- called Sofia (after his daughter, natch) and the cans are bright pink.

We can't get it here, I know- curious to see if any Statesiders have tried it....

Anyone?

Hello Loyal Reader,
I don't know your real name, but my husband Chris was at the last get together on STT. I don't know if he met you or sat at your table, but he has tried many of the Coppola wines and loved them. Although he tasted and bought the wine at the actual winery in CA. I ordered him a bottle thru the mail. Do you know if we can have it shipped to St. Thomas from their website? I did see the champagne in a can, I wanted to buy it just to try it, but haven't done so yet. I will let you know if I do!

Hi, Teresa

Yes, we met and spoke with Chris! Very nice guy. He and my boyfriend had a long, involved geeky conversation. They are both in the same industry. Turns out, they met in California at one point, as well. Small world. We used to live in the SF Bay area, and visited Coppola a few times. Beautiful grounds, and neat movie paraphernalia, but not all the wines swayed my palate ;-).

I really loved Grgich down the road- Mike is such a sweet man, and the dessert wine he named after his daughter is beyond compare! Wish we could get that here....

Don't think we can get wines shipped here- all CA wineries are restricted by law in the places they can ship to, and I don't think we're one of them!

Please do let me know if you try Sofia- the novelty of it amuses me!

Have you moved here yet?

Best,

LR

I also am a white wine drinker and will be going with my husband to St John in about 10 days, am I hearing that you cannot get CA wine in St John??? What would be the wine of choice in the not tooo dry yet not to sweet, with a bit of oak flavor in a chardonnay? Linda

LR,

Chris had told me that he met someone at the get together that he had met four years ago. I thought that was amazing! Do you live on the island year around? I have not moved there yet. I have visited twice since Chris had to see his baby (really, we have a 5 month old and he wanted to see me as well...). I will be moving in August.

I have not yet opened any of our Coppola wines. We had a nice bottle of Clo Du Bois merlot at Room With A View on our first trip to STT. Chris has pretty much stuck with CA wines. We have wineries here in Missouri that he laughs at. I don't mind. I am a Margarita girl at heart. Not as much sophistication in Missouri. 😉

Since I have gotten off the subject here, feel free to email me. Chris is going to the next get together tomorrow night as is Island Paul and some other 'regulars'.

Linda,
On STT, I did see some CA wines at Cost U Less of all places and some restaurants serve CA wines. I guess they go thru a distributor, but yes in some hidden places you can find good wine - on STT at least. I have not shopped on St. John for wine.

How ironic, we will be at a wedding in Napa in a few weeks and will be attending a separate evening gathering at the Coppola vineyard. I too used to visit the winery when we lived in the Bay Area and I LOVE their Diamond Series reds.
I promise to inquire about (and taste test) Sofia if available.
Huh, hadn't even heard of it...

Ronnie,
Thanks, it had me a bit worried, we do usually bring a bottle or two of our favorites to drink at the villa, but not going out of course. Take Care Linda

That is so curious. I loose my taste for my daily red wine when I am on island. It just doesn't seem to go as well with a tropical sunset as does a rum and pinapple.
