I'll preface this by saying that I've never traveled outside of the continental U.S., so excuse me if this is a dumb question, but I can't seem to find confirmation anywhere.

My family and I will be traveling from Chicago to STT, with a layover in North Carolina. Our flight is scheduled to arrive a mere 30 minutes before our car rental agency (Dependable) closes for the day. Our concern is how long it will take us to get through the airport upon arrival. As we are traveling from the U.S. with no out-of-country layovers, do we have to go through customs? And, if so, can anyone give me an estimate on how long that generally takes? I don't know the size or efficiency of the airport, but if it helps in giving an estimate, we'll be arriving in the late afternoon / early evening on a Monday in December.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

There are no Customs on arrival in STT from the USA -- if you call Dependable immediately and send one person with them to make the rental it would be the easiest - if you are carry-on only no problem at all - baggage may take 10-20 minutes as anywhere.
The size of the airport is rather small - one gate coming in from the runway and one small baggage carousel with only 2 lanes of traffic exiting the airport.

If you let Dependable know your flight number and arrival time I've no doubt they'll accommodate you if there should be any delay.

All excellent advise but I do want to add you will go through Customs and Immigration upon departure so be at the airport 2 hours before your flight leaves 🙂

I'm also renting from Dependable & scheduled to arrive at 4:20. I spoke with a very pleasant women who said that they would wait until 5:30 if I informed them we were going to be arriving no later than 5:15. We're just taking carry-ons. If it doesn't fit in a carry-on we don't need it.
