I am looking for information for a day sail (both half and full day) in December around Christmas time. There will be four of us on the trip to St Thomas (we have reservations for the week of Christmas) and we would like to take a sail for some snorkeling and fun. My wife and I visited USVI last year and we decided to return and give our kids an opportunity to experience the islands over winter break from school. I would appreciate any comments or recommendations, both negative and/or positive. Thanks.

We took the Winifred with Captain Sharon Allen out for a daysail/snorkel tour. She is wonderful. Her first mate snorkels with you to help point out the various "hard to see" creatures below the surface of the water. Nice light lunch provided.

There are many others out there. From what I've read on this forum over the years, it's truly hard to make a bad decision. The captains are doing it primarily for the love of sailing and introducing others to "their" waters. Sure - the money pays the bills, but I'm convinced it's more passion than finances.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

We just returned and went on a day sail on the No Shooz. It was very nice. We went to Jost for the day but they offer other itineraries. It was $130 pp and we bought our own lunch on Jost. http://www.divelowkey.com/watersports.htm

We've also been on the Scubadu (he's listed on this site, under the St John link, under Daysailing). Joe is the owner/captain and he was excellent. He served lunch on board, which was excellent both times we sailed with him. Cost there is $150 pp, a great deal since it includes lunch and drinks for the add'l month, but with only 4 folks it gets pricier b/c he has a $700 minumum. It's a larger Cat than the No Shooz tho, with an ourdoor table to eat on back. Joe jumped in with us and snorkeled, showing lots of very cool things we might not have otherwise noticed.

You won't be disappointed with either.

Make sure you book early. We were in STT in mid June. We went on Lion in Da Sun (powerboat) Excellent trip. Josh our captain said they are already pretty booked around Christmas time. I think he said they only had a day or 2 available.

Hi...

Was wondering what company you used for your powerboat outing. We aren't going to STJ until April, but I am a planner...like to have things all wrapped up. If you were happy with your tour, I'd love to know who you used. Thanks for your help!

Last November our family of 6 use "Lion In Da Sun"! Josh the captain, and co-owner with brother, tailored the day trip to the BVI to where we wanted to visit. The smaller power boat really allows you to plan your own day.The cost isn't bad either for all the fun you will have using this boat and captain.

We used Lion in Da Sun too. The whole day was perfect! We went where we wanted to go, when we want to. The price was very reasonable. We were also able to see more on a powerboat vs. a sailboat. We could go faster from place to place.

I did the half-day sail on the JollyMon - it's a 48 ft yawl. I liked it better than the "cattlemarans" because Gary and Gail only take a maximum of 6 people. We went to Buck Island and the snorkeling was awesome - Gail really knows the reef and the marine life. Next time, I plan to do the full day sail.

Promoguy: There's also Buck Island off STT. The Atlantis sub's excursion circles it and they've been "chumming" out there for years to keep the welcoming fish committee fat and happy so it's a nice little spot. Cheers!
