Charter a boat if you had a 3 year old and a 5 year old? Trying to figure out (still) if we should even attempt this activity with the whole gang (2 adults, 2 kids...and 68 year old granpa)....

pros, cons, suggestions, slap upside the head?

why wouldn't you? believe me (i work on a private charter that goes all throughout the BVI's) everyone goes boating! chartering a boat would be much easier than taking a ferry and better than getting on a boat with other people. just get a small 6-person max. boat and a captain for the day and you will have a great time. a good one i know is called V.I.B.E. i don't know the number but any conceierge service person on stt should be able to find out for you. the people that run V.I.B.E. are great and will work hard to make sure you have a fun and relaxing day.

good luck!

No, the kids are too little and will get bored and hot. And way too much sun IMO.

Ultimately it depends on your kids. My family went on the Limnos Charter departing from Red Hook when my children were 7 and 11. That was age appropriate for my family. With smaller children, I would only do it via a small private charter where you could modify your itinerary if need be. I've done both Limnos Charters (with the entire family), and "The Breakaway" trip with my older daughter (age 17). Do your research for a more detailed view of the trip, It 's a very long day for little ones. I personally wouldn't try to get my three year old through the rocks.........which includes climbing a small wooden ladder, and ropes on occasion to hold onto as you climb. As far as Grandpa..............I guess it depends on how agile he is. We didn't do our homework and only had flip flops on. Big mistake!

Just realized you said day trip to Jost, not "The Baths." I would definitely do a small charter to Jost. White Bay is great for the kids, the water and sand are amazing, and Soggy Dollar bar has great Pain Killers for the adults, and food for the kids.

I think everyone in your party would have fun -- I'd try to go mid-week, as the weekends at White Bay are crowded & party oriented. Jost is beautiful.

Keep in mind that if you're going to the soggy dollar bar, that to get to it, you have to jump in the water. It wasn't deep where our captain moored (about 5 feet), but if you want to go on the beach, then you'd have to figure out if your kids could jump in (with vests).

thanks guys! I think my kids could do jost.....nothing more. We just wanted to do one family thing...with granpa. We definitely wouldn't do the baths.....but we thought the boat thing and soggy dollar bar thing would be good.

my kids are good swimmers, so they would think that was COOL!!!!

thanks for the tips

if doing a private charter i'd say yes !! this way you have control over your travels. we've stayed on jost many times ( sandcastles & ivans ) but have never had kids with us, others do, esp day trips. i'm sure they'll just love the ride over & back ... make sure you all walk down the beach from the soggy dollar to Seddys One Love. he and his wife Raquel love kids ( have 2 youg ones themselves) and hopefully seddy will do some magic tricks for all of you..fun ! raquel makes a mean bushwacker too ! check out Jewels for lunch, she is a ny transplant and has a menu that will appeal to the kids..as in hot dog...not bad either. take a walk over the "hill" to Ivans Stress Free Bad & Campground . we have many fond memories staying there, just hanging, enjoying the company of Ivan. so go for it, you won't regret the adventure ...maybe you can return in the future just you and hubby ....it's a whole different vibe. have a great time !!
