Hello, we are returning to the islands on July 2. I have contacted both companies regarding a Jeep rental to take to St. John. Has anyone any experience of which company is better to deal with? Last year we got screwed by Budget and rented from Hertz (which they were excellent) However, this year since we are arriving on a Saturday (last year we came on a Thursday), I am assuming I am having a bit harder time getting a rental. Thanks in advance!! Can't wait to be back.
I have dealt with dependable for a few years now. I have nothing but nice things to say about them. Their rates have always been good and they pick you up from the airport and drive you back upon return. I know they allow their vehicles to travel to St John. I think Hertz may be the only one that doesn't. i have no personal experience with Discount, but have heard good things about them as well. Hope that helps and have a nice trip
Never used Dependable so I can't comment on them. Used Discount the last couple of years(most recently the week of 3/19/11). Haven't had a problem with them. People that work there are nice and picked us up at the airport quick. The Jeep Wrangler(4dr) we rented was new. Will rent with them again.
We have a vehicle booked through Budget on STT to take to St. John. Can you elaborate on the problem you had with tBudget? I still have time to switch rental companies!
We have had a way groovy relationship with Dependable for a few years now.
Wouldn't have done it if they weren't,well, dependable...
Keep island time in mind, and be as kind and patient as you'd like to be treated.

Most problems with Budget have been customer service, nasty agents, long lines, no cars, even if you have a confirmation....things like that.
I'll never rent off of them again.
Thanks for your help guys. Tough call, but at least its seems like either one will be excellent.
tedh - We had a JEEP reserved, but when we got in, they didn't have one...unknowingly, we left and came back the next day (we were staying on STT for one more night and didn't NEED the vehicle)...they said to come back the next day...well we came back to find that they STILL didn't have a vehicle...we went to HERTZ in the airport which was right next to them and paid double, but we got a brand new vehicle ON THE SPOT. So just because Budget is cheap...I don't know how you actually get a vehicle...must be pure luck, thank goodness I didn't give them my money up front, they were trying to get me to take a small coupe for the same price.
We have had all of the above mentioned problems with Budget and will never use them again. Have used Dependable for the past 4 years without incident...highly recommend them. Have never used discount.

Three years ago we had issues with Budget as well.
For the past two years we have used Discount and have not had any issues.
We plan on using them again this year.
My husband and I just got back from a week and a half in STT and St. John. We have always used name brand rental agencies when abroad, but we took a chance and selected Discount Car Rental. WOW! We were so impressed!! They simply blew the competition away in customer service and friendliness. After we collected our bags, we gave them a ring to pick us up. They were there in minutes and we were on our way to the hotel in less than 15.
We highly recommend a Jeep Wrangler! The 4 wheel drive jeep allowed us to go via car barge to St. John (p.s. - never attempt to even think about going to St. John without a 4-wheel drive vehicle!!) and see so much more than we did on our last visit there. Enjoy your visit!! I know we did!
