Good afternoon. Does anyone know where I can buy a DEhumidifier today (i.e., a store that actually has dehumidifiers in stock now)? I've tried Home Depot, K-Mart, Doctor's Choice, and Cost-U-Less to no avail, though several people have tried to sell me humidifiers under the mistaken (and quite curious) belief that dehumidifiers and humidifiers are the same thing... Thanks, and best wishes for a 2009!

Moldy in Marienhoj,
Lulu

Dunno about any electric dehumidifiers here on island...most of use just use Damp*Rid, which can usually be found at Seachest, Ace Hardware in Red Hook, probably at K-Mart and Home Depot and Cost-U-Less, too, but I'm not 100% on that. It's just some 'stuff'...kinda like rock salt, but you put it in your closet and put a bowl underneath it and it fills with water from dehumidifying the closet...works pretty well, too....anyone else have any good info? Besides running A/C 24/7! Haha!

Thanks, Marty! I am using Damp Rid now, but it is no match for the humidity on the North Side. I guess I will have to order an electric dehumidifier online.

All the best,

Lulu

Depends what space you are trying to deal with -- I have used low wattage heat rods in my closets-- forever here - commonly sold as 'piano rods' and have had good results overall - not too bad on the WAPA bill and keeps everything dry and mold free in some good sized closets. Might be effective in a closed off small room?? Wouldn't make a difference in a whole house environment .

I don't have a phone book on me but the pharmacy in Havensight will have one as will the pharmacy at Lockhart mall. Have seen them in both stores.

I use a small ceramic space heater in my clothes closet during the summer months. It cycles automatically and works very well keeping things dry. I bought mine in the states and brought it down in my suitcase.

Thank you all for your helpful responses! Hopefully I can solve the problem before any more of my clothes and shoes are destroyed!

Hope you soon find a solution. I empathize - lived on the North side only once a number of years ago and had SO many problems with mold and mildew. The top part of the house was no problem but the bottom where the bedrooms were all located was a continual disaster and I was never more glad to leave! Good luck!

I hadn't really thought about it but since we started using a space heater (we live way, way up) the mold and such have been lessened in the bedroom. That might be a great idea. Also, my WAPA bills have not seen major increases by using the heaters.
