Did anyone else who took the Big Beard Buck Island trip swim with Sammie the stingray? I'm starting to feel a little on my own with that experience. She actually let me rub her underbelly and was quite affectionate, but I was the only person on board who seemed to have no fear of her.
For those who do not know, Sammie is a six foot stingray that has been a resident of Buck Island for about eleven years, according to our boat captain. She is very docile and seems to enjoy physical attention. I hope I am not the only person who experienced this wonderful creature!

Hello Michael

Yes I've met Sammie twice - the 1st time in June of '97 she snuck up on me, and scared all the juices out of me, and again last October, when I dove off of the sail boat that took us to Buck Island, darn near dove on top of her - I think I paid her back from our 1st meeting.
It's all good.

Isn't St Croix & Buck Island incredible

michael-

i've met sammy a few times. eventhough i live here, i don't get out to buck island that often. the last time i went i spent about an hour diving down (snorkeling) and petting sammy. she kept on circling me and would follow me if i began to swim away. it was great. st croix's little sting ray city. 😉 she's not always there, but there is a decent chance that if others go out, they'll get the joy of meeting her too.

p.s. to those of you who are scared of sting rays - don't be! unless you step on them or hurt them in some way, they are harmless.

Michael--

I have been swimming with Sammy for many years. My brother and i have snorkeled with her, and have pet her. She has even eaten out of my hands and swam between my legs. If you are scared, don't be, she is very playful and lots of fun.

Well, I'm glad that others enjoyed her company as much as I did! I can't imagin why anyone would be afraid of her!

I have not had the pleasure of swimming with Sammie the Stingray, but was lucky enough to be scuba diving and had Mary the Mahi and Terry the Tuna introduce themselves to me, was amazing.

When we went to Buck Island on Big Bear a deck hand named Erin feed Sammie some tuna scraps. Sammie seemed to relish it!
