There will be five adults and two babies traveling to stt. Can anyone tell me how far it is between airport and car barge? We are thinking renting a car (not big enough for all of us) in stt and taking on car barge. Some will have to take a cab with the luggage. We basically want transportation in the event of an emergency witht he babies. Any suggestions for getting from airport to either passenger ferry or car barge? Any thoughts welcomed for this transition..

They do have cars large enough for you and your luggage. Many SUVs available for rental. Just make sure you are arriving early enough to get to Red Hook to catch the barge. Hertz does not allow their cars to go to St John.

RL, thank you. We are arriving at the airport at 1:25pm on a Thursday. Does it take an hour to get to the ferry terminal and which one is best? I think I understand there to be more than one. We have tentatively reserved a mid size car through Budget, and I think we all will not fit with luggage and two baby car seats. It looks like if we stay with this size some will ride in a cab to the ferry.

There is no car barge out of CA so you will have to go to Red Hook. Check the ferry schedule at the top of this page for car barge times. One hour should be ample time to drive to Red Hook from the airport but bear in mind that a 1:25PM arrival doesn't mean you'll be out of the airport at that time so make allowance for that.

I agree with STT. Sometimes the Budget counter can be crowded and then you have to go find your rental car in the lot. Two of us tried to do that and one had a very hard time finding her car.

I suggest you have at least one person go right to the counter and the others look for your baggage if you're not doing all carry on.

Once you get into St. Thomas, just try to relax because everything works out.

Plan on 1 hour to get your luggage. If it is less than that you'll be happy. Our friends waited 1 1/2 hours for their luggage. They arrived at 1:45 on a Saturday. I think about 4 other planes were getting around that time as well. It was a ZOO!
