I have seen quite a bit of discussion about waterproof cases for cameras, so you can use them to take pictures underwater. It sounds like there are basically two types, a waterproof bag with a clear window for the lens, and a case that is custom fit for each camera. I have a Canon A630, and the case for it is roughly $180, which is more than I want to pay for a weeks worth of underwater pics.

That got me thinking, do any of the camera shops/stores on either STT or STJ rent the cases? I would happily pay $30 or so to rent one for the week, rather than buying one.

What a great idea. I'd rent one for my Nikon 5700 or my Nikon D70. Sorry I don't know of anyone who does this though...

I don't think that would be practical because they would need cases for each brand & model. Now the bag types are more generic & you can get one for about the price you are willing to rent one. The most expensive are fot the bigger cameras with large zooms. Check out ebay.

Hey IA Joe~

Check out my post & link under "Water Proof Housing". Like yourself...I hated the thought of spending the $$$ for the housing for a few days worth of snorkeling. Reluctantly...this past March...I bit the bullet. WHEW...LOVE IT...LOVE IT...LOVE IT!!! Can't believe it took me that long. Oh how I wish I'd've had it March '06 at Salt Pond...several octupus that I DO NOT have pictures of...

Geez... I just got a new Canon dSLR and I'd be a little nervous taking my new baby underwater. But I wouldn't mind taking my little pocket Kodak - or would buying a disposable be the most cost effective solution?

You could buy a housing, use it for the week (or however long your vacation is) and then sell it (eBay) when you get back for maybe a 25%-30% loss...
