I realize it may be too early to tell but can anyone shed any light on the ferry schedule changes from downtown STT to Cruz Bay STJ? Is this a permanent thing? Will they resume the normal schedule by late January? Any locals have some insight on this. We will be there in January and want to prepare ourselves as to which ferry to take, we typically take the downtown ferry so we can immediately start enjoying the islands via water vs. sitting in a van for 45 minutes to get to Red Hook.

Again, I realize it's probably to early to predict but if anyone has info that would be great. If not I'll check back as we get closer to departure.

Thanks

For the winter season and stating Dec 13 the ferry from downtown to STJ will be run only 3 times a day ----- 10am, 1pm, 5;30pm
this will be the schedule all winter and there has been much discussion at the PSC meetings of allowing the ferries to discontinue this run altogether as it hasn't proved to be profitable.

excuse my ignorance but it would seem that the winter months (which is when most travel to the islands) are the busiest, every time we've been down (6 years running) the ferry to STJ is packed when we get on it.

W/ the proposed changes to the downtown ferry I'm assuming the Red Hook ferry is going to be very overloaded. Will they be increasing those ferry trips or remaining the same?

I only question this because late January we have some family flying down to join us on STJ for a week and they've never been. I was going to take the ferry from STJ to STT to meet them at the airport and then get them to the ferry w/ ease, they are traveling w/ 2 little ones and I was hoping to ease some stress of getting from airport to STJ. Looks like I'll be spending the day traveling from STJ to STT airport w/ having to go via Red Hook now!

Oh well. At least I know now and not when I got there so I can plan ahead.

Thanks for the info

The Public Services Commission can be reached at ------ www.psc.gov.vi
They regulate the ferry.

Do they or is it the other way around? 😉
Seems to me that the PSC would like the downtown ferry running but the operators find ways to operate on their own schedule.
