I hear that people with dread locks are not respected on the island.

Why would that be?

I don't know where you heard this but we have a sizable Rastafarian community whose culture is to sport dreads and they're certainly not looked upon negatively or regarded with disrespect.

There was a time when the BVI restricted those with locks from entry, but that's changed now. They probably assumed marijuana would be involved sooner or later.

Lots or respectable, hard working, family-types with dreads, both men and women.

The only thing that I can think of that would lead someone to say anything like this is that the BVI used to refuse entry to some people with dreads. This hasn't been the case for some time now. There are many men and women with dread locks here, of all walks of life. We even have a senator with dread locks, Senator Terrance "Positive" Nelson. So...I don't think that most of the people who live here really think badly of people with dreads.
