Visiting STJ next month. Have rented a Jeep Wrangler. I've seen a couple of Youtube videos about driving on the islands, and now I'm starting to get a little nervous. I'm not just worried about driving on the left side of the road, but the roads look very narrow and windy. How scary is driving on STJ? We're going to be staying in Coral Bay, but plan on driving all around the island.

You will be fine. The speed limit is relative to the road condition. I believe that I read somewhere that StJ has the lowest (average?)speed limit in the US. Night driving can provide a bit of a challenge but just relax and leave the sightseeing to the passengers when moving and use the overlooks and parking spots to allow the driver to see the island. It doesn't ake long to get the feel of island driving.

Where are you from straycat?

I'm from a little bit of everywhere I guess. Right now I'm living near New Orleans, but I've lived in Canada, the Middle East, California, Texas, and Pennsylvania. I've also traveled around the world a good bit. I've driven on the left side of the road in Australia and London, but was concerned that this would be even more challenging. Thanks for your helpful answers to all of my questions.

Have you travelled Texas Hill Country backroads? I'm thinking around Green or New Braunfals.
It would be similar if you moved to the left side of the road, lowered the speed limit to 25 mph and had a rain shower every afternoon. Oh and of course exchanged the big pickups for jeeps. Believe me, it is easy to get used to.

The only problem I have is remembering to keep left when I make turns out of a parking lot or non-public roadway. I try to stay right.

The maximum speed limit throughout the USVI is 35MPH. St Croix has flat highways and the speed may "up" a bit. However, on both STT and STJ you'll be driving max 25MPH and more often 20MPH. To be honest when I hit 37MPH on Weymouth Rhymer Highway on STT on a good day I'm looking at the speedometer and going, "WHOA!" Me who used to travel interstate highways and do 80 with no problem ...

It's no biggie. Just remember to stay left! Cheers! And enjoy your visit, of course ...

We thought driving on the left was easy to get used to. STT seemed to be a bit more agressive driving than STJ and a bit more conjested. But we adapted to both and realized everybody was pretty forgiving.

Think more Pittsburgh hills. Take your time and don't leave it too late on a schedule(?) so you avoid racing around (not that you'll want to).
Biggest problem I have is wanting to look at everything and running risk of not paying attention.
