how scary is it driving a rental car in St Thomas? Should i just suck it up and pay taxi fees to get to places I want to go?

Speed limit is 30 miles an hour.
I'm much more scared of driving, stateside.
Daytime driving should be fine and once you're familiar getting around for a couple days, you can even venture out after dark!

Max speed is 35MPH but the majority of your driving will be in the 20-30 range. Thousands of visitors every year quickly adapt to it very quickly, so don't worry about it! Taxiing is expensive and they charge per person. You'll find the taxi rates listed under "Transportation" on the St Thomas link top of this page. Have fun!

PS: You don't need 4WD on St Thomas nor for a day trip to St John if you decide to take the car barge over to enjoy a day there. A simple compact will get you around just fine.
