Has anyone had problems with people approaching you to buy drugs. In Jamaica we couldn't walk anywhere without someone trying to sell us drugs and smoking freely on the streets. Since I am taking my grandson I am wondering if I need to watch out for him every minute. Hes just 16 but 6"5' and looks older . He's a country boy and never been around that kind of thing here in our little Town. Any advise of places not to go to avoid this on STT and STJ. Thank you, Dala Jo

I've never encountered that problem in the USVI. But, I look more like a NARC than a druggie.

The only place on STJ I ever noticed any drug use was on the street where Cafe Roma & Rhumblines are. And that was only in the evening/night. I was never approached by a seller, but I probably don't look like a user. If you are approached, politely decline and continue on your way. STJ is NOTHING like Jamaica.

Drugs are available on STT and STJ, but , as mentioned, it's nowhere as prevalent or as open as , say, Jamaica. People selling drugs will somewhat discretely inquire if someone is interested. If your grandson doesn't want drugs, he won't end up with any.

I should mention that one way that tourists can sometimes get themselves into a messy situation is by going looking for illegal substances or activities.

Coki Beach on STT often has smokers. Just ignore them and enjoy the beach. You probably won't be approached if you're together, but they may assume that some young man alone might be looking for something. Just say no.

Sounds good. Jamaica accepts it. And for sure USVI doesn't look like the poor country of Jamaica. VI looks so clean and beautiful there by all the pictures I've seen. I will just use common sense and pass your advice on to my grandson. Thanks, Dala Jo

I hate to ruin your perception of your "little town," love2snorkel, but drugs are abundant anywhere, especially inside the USA.

Your grandson will have no problems staying away from drugs in the USVI; but where there is a will, there is a way...

Beautiful, yes. Clean, well.... pictures are just that. You will see trash on St. Thomas, to a lesser extent on St. John. I try to pack out a little trash when I find it on the beaches. There's a yin/yang thing here when it comes to aesthetics.

Cheese and bread! VI law does NOT accept it, period! No worries. If some idiot comes up to you proffering at Coki, say no and walk on Cheers!

I'm sure that there are drugs in our "little town" but I have never seen it. we don't even have a stop light here. Big on church, sports, hunting and fishing. A western town. Maybe thats why we don't see it. And maybe thats why all the kids move when they graduate. We're all just ol' folk. :~) Allan Jackson even bought a house here.
