Wondering if when we get to Philadelphia Airport if we can buy and take some liquor on the plain with us.

I know there's a duty free shop there and they sell liquor, perfume, cigarettes, etc...but if we buy something will security at some point take it because of the regulations in effect for carrying liquids?

Connie, just a little confused about your post. Are you saying that you're thinking of picking up duty-free liquor at the Philadelphia Airport to BRING to the USVI? I've never heard of anyone bringing liquor IN to the USVI which is a duty-free territory, period. If that really is your question, suggest you check with stateside Customs but I think you're thinking backwards! Cheers.

STT...the reason I'm doing that is because when we get to St. Thomas, a greeter will meet us and take us right to our Villa....most likely we'll hang out there awhile before going out.

We will not have the opportunity or the time to stop anywhere, even the Marina Market to pick up some Vodka. We are having the grocery godesses pick us up some beer, but wasn't sure whether I wanted them to pick up the Vodka.

That's why I was thinking of picking up some in Phila and brining with us.

Just wondering whether they will allow me on the plane with it. I know we go through security before the duty free shop, so would i be ok?

Yes you can take it on but there is a store right next to where you get your lugage in STT in the airport that you can by any thing you want cheaper then in the states anyway

Is the rum in the store at the STT airport cheaper than at Mixology?

Thanks Waterguy for your information. It will be easier then trying to take it on the plane and worry about it breaking.

STT...the only liquor that I drink on occasion, besides beer of course :o) is Coconut Run. I've tried them all, I've looked for different brands, but after last year Cruzan is definetly the best Run around.

The price is right, the taste is fantastic and that's all I buy now.

Connie,
As you know you can get your booze at the airport no problem, but I am curious...why not let the grocery godesses pick up the booze....you are going to pay the minimum fee anyway! 🙂 This is exactly what their service is for! You already have them coming, just add the booze to your list! I used to do provisioning for McLaughlin and booze is usually the most important thing on the list! Now, if you wanted a certain wine or a special type of beer, THEN they might have to go out of their way to get it!
Enjoy!

I don't know why i didn't add that to my list Sherri. I know i have the opportunity to get it now anyway, so i just kept it off the list.

Actually, I'm backing off of the planning for this trip because we've had a falling out with friends over the rental car. Believe that?

I'm not the trip planner anymore. I'm relaxing a bit. I know what I need and what I want to do for this trip and they can fend for themselves.

I just hope that the week we spend there is relaxing and fun.

Hi, hope someone can answser my question-we have not traveled to St. Thomas since the 3 ounce liquid limit for carry ons...on our previous trips we purchased cruzan rum from a store and carried it on the plane with us in the cardboard box, I assume we can no longer do that. All I could get from the airlines, was that it must be checked and there is no special handling for fragile items (not good!). The liquor store in St Thomas airport is outside of security (unless they moved it???) so whatever we buy there, wouldn't be allowed as carry on either. Is this correct? What have others done to bring liquor home from St Thomas?
Thanks for your help.
Traci

Hi Traci,
You can carry the booze as always...no changes! No problems!

Hi Traci

You are correct, you have to check the boxes of liquor as luggage - you are no longer allowed to carry it on the plane due to the 3oz rule.

I travel back Stateside quite often and it never fails that they get as far as the screening process and they are forced to go back outside and check it or dump it and last trip there was a "newlywed" who missed her flight on Delta because she refused to hand over her rum - saw her chugg a small bottle of rum and have to dump the rest (3 large bottles) - needless to say she was pi**ed (both physically and because she wasted her money on the rum and they also took her pefume !!)

The Duty Free is still outside but they are pretty good at packing those cardboard boxes for flight - another place that does a great job is AH Rise.

Hope this helps

Pia

I just got back a few weeks ago. I bought my rum at AH Riise (3 bottles for $20 -- they are my new best friends.) Anyhow, the guys there are excellent at packing the bottles up. I didn't have any problems. I did have to sign a waiver saying I had no claim if they broke the bottles, but they took great care of them. They say it's no special handling, but my box was one of the first off the plane. It beat me down to the luggage claim and it wasn't on the conveyor belt when I got down there. So obviously someone took care of it.

The traditional "carry" liquor boxes supplied by supermarkets, liquor stores, etc. are very sturdy. The majority would check them in as luggage even before the 3 oz rule came into effect and, there was then and is now, only very marginal negative feed-back on either this or other travel forums where their safe arrival is concerned.

Of course there are instances where the bottles have arrived smashed or empty but these incidences are SO in the minority. Many years ago I packed a bottle of single malt scotch into my luggage on a trip to England. My brother likes a tipple of his single malt and, even though it's of course made right there in the UK, the price there was and is about four times the price here. To cut a long story short, when I eventually both received and opened up my luggage four days after my arrival (it was lost but that's a whole 'nother story!) the very carefully wrapped bottle of single malt was just a shell of glass.

However, my clothes were soaked in very expensive single malt Scotch and there were some shoes in that suitcase in which Scotch had pooled. As my lovely brother watched me unpack, I offered him a shoe. "Come on, I brought this all the way just for you, so at least take a sip!" He demurred. He likewise decided not to take me up on my generous offer to suck on my Scotch-soaked clothes before they were cleaned....

Cheers!

On the way down, I took a bottle of coconut tequila in my luggage just in case we couldn't get to the store in a timely manor. I wrapped it up and THEN put it in a big ziploc bag. That way if it did break, I'd have had a ziploc full of booze instead of a suitcase full. I also brought ziploc bags to put my rum bottles in, just in case. However, they were packed very well and there were no worries.

We had a bad experience our last trip in Feb. Checked our booze as baggage (packed by AH Riise) and had two broken bottles when we arrived home. A fellow traveler had more than that broken. I honestly believe it was the airline personnel deliberately handling the boxes carelessly. We have traveled from STT and brought booze back 10 or more times with no problems. I guess it's a chance you must be willing to take. We did sign the form saying we would not hold them responsible. I think every airlines has that policy now.
