I've heard different stories.
You can surf on St. John with a decent swell direction, or St. John has no surf and you need to go to Tortola or St. Thomas to surf.

anybody actually witnessed someone surfing on St. John?

I can't speak for all the time, but when I was in STT/STJ in Sept there was barely even a break in the water. The last day I was there, Isabel was just making her turn north and there were waves of maybe 1-2 feet coming ashore. I missed the monsoons a couple months ago, but I imagine there were some good waves since some of the beaches eroded.

I saw no surfers at all on either island...but that could have just been the season when I was there.

I've seen pictures of Hull Bay on ST. Thomas,
Cane Garden Bay has good waves on Tortola,
never seen a surfer on ST. John but I've heard many st john surfers surf on Tortola so they must surf somewhere on ST John too.

Was in STJ in late Dec. and saw surfers at Cinnamon Bay beach. There was a lot of winds which gave the proper swells. Swam @ Trunk Bay and thought the waves would have worked there.

Rock on!

thanks everyone on this board,
have surfboard, will travel!
I'm getting a free trip to the islands and just would kick myself if the waves looked fun and I didn't have a board with me.
I surfed for two hours at home today and the water was 56 degrees so I can't wait to feel the caribbean.

We there Dec 25 for 7 days. The wind was pretty strong. At Sapphire Beach this felllow came up a small parachute and he had about a 50' rope. One guy held the shut out to catch wind. He had like a small surf board with feet caps. He would catch the wind
and get on the board and lean back and go side to side. He could jump a wave and some how turn his direction the othe way. He started out goinb back and forth small then
finalla took him out as far as he wanted to.
I was thinking it must have been ruff on the back. But he was a young surfer Dude
who had the body for it.

Well folks...surfing is not a seriuos activity in the Virgin Islands. I grew up near Santa Cruz (that's Monterey Bay...California) Lots of great surf but... 50 degree water temperature in the winter (sometimes less...freeze your ....). We all know that Hawaii and Australia have some of the greatest surf water in the world. The Virgin island has much calmer water and does not have the breaks that encourage surfiing. That's good for just floating and enjoying...Yes... Carrot Bay ( near Bomba"s) on Tortola in the BVI has a pretty good break. but not world class by any definition. Surfers will try anything...but the Virgin islands is not the place for them...Oh well some would surf a bathtub if nothing else was around...

Kite boarding is the newest water sport around here- kind of a cross between wind surfing and parasailing..think snow boarding on water... P.S, There were surfers on Johnson's Reef yesterday afternoon, a swell seems to be coming in.

Yo I'm replying to your question about any surfers being on St. john. The answer is yes there are actually a good number of us st. Johnians that rip. Although St.john may not have as good a North Shore as Totola we do have a fairly decent South shore that happens to go off every once in a while. Actually Hurricane Fabian sent us a swell last summer that made our south spots break comparable to indo, And I was out there charging barrell and boosting airs. Next time you come down maybe you should start looking before you assume theres no surfers in St. John

ok just got back from St. John and now I know the scoop.
Yes there is surf on St. John although Tortola and St. Thomas have a lot more swell exposure for this time of year (january). When I arrived flying in to St. Thomas there was a large swell and you could see spots breaking all over with boat access only so I know the locals have some spots stashed away for those special occasions! I Surfed Johnson's reef about 3/4 mile off of Trunk Bay and it is a good quality left reef break that breaks in shallow reef water with shifty sections (only surfed it twice so that's what I got). the coral is visible as you take off and if you fall chances are you will eat some reef. Not recomended for anyone but the locals and competent visitors. Cinnamon Bay can have fun days but it seems to be shadowed from swell and not too consistent (lots more beginners and local kids having fun). Weekends are crowded but early week days with swell can be enjoyable. Don't hurry and pack your bags for a surf trip to St.John but I would say it is a beautiful spot with very cool, decent people and if you are down that way give it a go and enjoy the beauty and surf. I did. Plus if its flat there is plenty of stuff to do. two thumbs up.

2 years ago I saw surfers in Hart Bay. It's a pretty shallow bay and very reefy (which probably accounts for the break) and I can't imagine wiping out would be much fun there.

I was a crazzy fool to try body surfing during a nice swell....a few months ago.
I wish I had a board that day...the waves were vicious and breaks were all over the place.
