We are planning on bringing our 23 family member to the Virgin Islands next June for a retreat. We will also have our 70 foot boat. We'd like to use the boat for day trips but, stay in nice on-land accomodations. does anyone have any recommendations?

Do you already have docking for your boat? Where are you coming from that you can get the boat here? Just curious!

That said, and thinking about dock availability along with accommodation, you might want to check out Sapphire where there is both a marina and many rental options either through Sapphire management or via private condo rentals - plenty of choices there, plus the beach is gorgeous and the general island access is excellent. Compass Point Marina on the East End might also be an option for the boat but there's no nearby accommodation although Sapphire is just a 10 minute drive away. American Yacht Harbor also has slips and is a 5 minute drive from Sapphire.

I don't have any of these numbers to hand (I could look them up but I'm too tired right now!) but you can check the local telephone book at www.viphonebook.com.

I'm sure others will have other recommendations but that's mine. Cheers!

STT Resident is correct. Annually, our family of 28 plus our daughters 8 friends fly down at Christmas for a week. Sapphire Beach is perfect. You can stay/dock at Sapphire Marina and you are comfortable walking distance to Sapphire Resort and to Crystal Cove condos - aka Sapphire Bay West. Good luck!

Stoomoo:

I believe someone else, a while ago on this forum, indicated that the maximum boat length that Sapphire could accept is 50 feet. Highly recommend that you call ahead.

American Yacht Harbor could accommodate you.

Or, if you prefer, you could drop your hook at Water Bay and dingy to Fungi's (restaurant) at the Point Pleasant Resort......it may even be possible to negotiate using an existing mooring ball if someone isn't using theirs at the time of your visit. Of course, Point Pleasant is a nice place to stay, as well.

Also check out Crown Bay Marina and Yacht Haven Grande for dockage. I am also curious about where the boat is...

Also, the moorings around the USVI and BVI are for boats 60' and less. The rules about anchoring in the National Park are on the National Park website

On the east end of STX, Green Cay Marina may fit your bill - they are full service and accommodate to 100':

http://marinas.com/view/marina/6392

The Tamarind Reef Hotel is right there, as well as two very nice restaurants - the casual Deep End Bar and the more upscale Galleon. The Buccaneer is close by for golf or accommodations and there are also lovely villas within 5-10 minutes driving distance, some with white sand beaches, like D'Estasi, Paradise Found. Check out Vacation St. Croix for villa options - Marti Gotts and her staff are wonderful and can put together just about anything for you and your group:

www.vacationstcroix.com

There's also Salt River Marina on the north side of STX right near Columbus Landing Beach. There are a couple of gorgeous villas right above it: Sugar Bay House and Blue Vista and I'm sure a few others nearby - Marti could tell you.

Sounds like a great time!

You could try the East End of St. John, Round Bay is place you can anchor. There are about 15 short term rental properties. The rentals range from 2 to 5 bedrooms. Some have pools. East End is 10 to 15 minutes by car or dinghy to Coral bay restaurants and shops. There are several good day trip islands and coves for snorkeling. It is adjacent to Hurricane Hole, but outside the Park. And there are five + miles of lightly traveled roads for hikers.

east end of st john is beautiful.
you can contact ourrentalparadise.com re: villa on east end. with 5 bedrooms plus . It is directly behind sloop jones on the hillside..
You can anchor your boat as sloop jones recommends. This owner also has new villa on oppposite shore of east end area that will accommodate more people . Renovations are being done now. easy to deal with owner..

Sloop read my mind!

Our Rental Paradise has two properties, and between the two of them, they would accommodate your group. I would contact them. They ar great to work with. We were supposed to rent from them but had to cancel, but I do want to rent from them in the future.

Depending or you budget for accommodations. Caneel Bay on St John would be my first choice. There is no shortage of great anchorages and day tripping around the island as well as short trips to the BVI would be possible. There are public moorings available at the resort, owned and operated by the park service. You boat will be on the upper end of what the moorings will hold, but it is also legal to anchor there as long as you stay seaward of the moorings. It is a high end resort with good food and service and multiple world class beaches right on the resort property. With that large of a group some people are bound to want to do their own thing and easy access by cab or rental car to the rest of the island will let them do just that. Caneel also operates it's own ferry between St John and St Thomas so shopping in St Thomas will be a short ferry ride away. Here is the web page. http://www.caneelbay.com/

Yes Jay, their boat is too large to use a mooring ball as the maximum length for a mooring ball is 60'. For boats 61'-125' they must anchor in sand 200 feet seaward of mooring field but I agree Caneel Bay would be a very nice choice 🙂

Sounds like a great family reunion; and you have received suggestions for St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. Hey you could plan a trip that includes them all. 😉

For boat information you could start on this site's Marina/Anchorage Sites Page. In includes a list of marinas with some info. on max size, number of slip etc. and their telephone numbers. Also basic info. on anchorages and phone numbers for various agencies to get more information on moorings.

i have stayed at a private villa rental in St. Thomas that can accommodate 22 people. I was there for the wedding of a girlfriend who got married in May 2008 and the wedding party stayed at Sand Dollar Estate www.sanddollarestate.com. It is by far the most luxurious St. Thomas villa rental and the only one that has its own private beach (in addition to a private pool). It was the perfect setting for their wedding, and i also think it would work well for a family reunion. Their website has info specificially about planning family reunions and family vacations.
