Hi ~It's been a few years since I've been back to the island (2006) to be exact. I'm bringing a group of over 100 people to the Westin and would love to know the latest on the restaurants on the island - what's hot - what's not?
A few of our old favorites were:
Ten Tables *but I think they retired)
Stone Terrace (? not sure if I remember name)
Any updates, changes, new recommendations?
In Cruz Bay the Lime Inn, Asolare, ZoZo's, LaTapa and Paradiso are still there. Also Rhumb Lines, Cafe Roma, Uncle Joe's Bar-B-Q, Banana Deck, Ocean Grill (Mongoose Junction), High Tide, Morgan's Mango, and JJ's Texas Coast are all still there as well. New in the Market Place is La Plancha Del Mar (really great food...don't miss happy hour). I may have missed a couple but that's a pretty good list.
Tage, Ten Table and Stone Terrace have all closed. Currently Asolare is a cash only restaurant. Depending on when you will be here, Sweet Plantains in Coral Bay is an excellent restaurant. Paradiso is under new management/owner as of last week (I believe the deal was finalized last week)
Asolare-on shaky legs
Ten Tables- Closed
Stone Terrace- Closed
Paradiso- on shaky legs
There has been a LOT of drama around Asolare, Paradiso, The Balcony, and Chloe and Bernards and we will have to wait to see what happens with them. They next few months should tell. (you can search on www.virgin-islands-on-line.com to read more about that)
Tage has long closed and is now Hind's. Walter Hinds formerly of Stone Terrace is running it and it has a strong local following.
Stone Terrace is closed but a new place was set to open it's doors again a couple of days ago, it will be Mexican, can't remember the name off hand.
Ten Tables/Chilly Billy's is now Jakes. It is not upscale, more like Chilly Billy's used to be (but better I think!)
One new place is La Plancha del Mar, where the China Shack used to be, second level of the Marketplace. This is a NOT miss...very very tasty!
If you like Sushi, then Happy Fish is also great. Second level of the Marketplace. I eat here a LOT.
Waterfront Bistro, Wharfside Village (old Panini Beach spot, but completely re-modeled) upscale dining. Great lunch and dinner.
dalivio, across the street from Lime Inn, upscale Italian. My friend really likes this place, but I've never been.
La Tapa, one of my all time favorites, is still there, still doing a great job!
There are several other smaller places that have opened since your last visit, Surly Cantina, The G Spot, The Tourist Trap, I'm sure there are more!
Thanks for all the updates -- sorry to hear about all the changes - we usually did Asolare and Zo'Zo's for a faculty dinner - what 2 would you recommend for around 15-20 people? As it's high season - want to start working on this asap.
I would say La Tapa, Waterfront Bistro, La Plancha del Mar, Zozo's, and Hinds would all be great picks. Asolare and Paradiso may be back on track by the time you come, but as much as they want to say everything is "fine" with them...I'm not convinced.
I read the articles -- its crazy -- so is Chloe & bernards just shut up tight? What happened to Tage - where did the chef go?
Have you heard anything about Pink Conch (house) - it looks as though I may sell all of my rooms and need additional lodging for participants of the course, please let me know - it says it shares the Westin Beach and if it's walk to the Westin - that might not be too bad for some of them.
Ted from Tage is still here and he is doing his own thing now. You can check out his website, www.tedssupperclub.com I see him every now and again with his dog and he seems to be very happy! I know Tage was a lot of stress for him towards the end.
Sorry, don't know anything about Pink Conch.
We have enjoyed Morgan's Mango (but not for several years) and Fish Trap. I'm surprised no one has suggested these two. I'd love to hear from others with opinions/updates.
Morgan's Mango was really good, but I preferred The Tourist Trap and Shela's Pot 🙂
Is Fish Trap still open? We have had good meals there.
Yes! Still open.
I am counting the days until we can eat again at Sweet Plaintains, my all time favorite upscale eatery on STJ. That place is like heaven IMHO.
What the heck is so memorable about the Tourist Trap? We' ll be staying again at Concordia in December and want to go there but isn't it just a take-out, super casual hot dog kind of place with killer drinks? I looked at their website and can't figure out why there are so many raves. I'm sure we'll like it, but the raves are so great, I'm wondering what makes it so great. We aren't hotdog/burger fans on vacations, prefer local, mango-ey-coconuty type dishes but sounds like we need to check this place out.
