Just did this a week or so ago.
We used Avis no prob taking the car over, Hertz said they wouldn't allow it so they lost my business. Check with your car company. Even Avis said they were not responsible for loss if something happened to the ferry.

The cost was $35 for a two way. This ran on the hour.

WARNING when leaving St. John get into the lot for the 4:00 ferry but don't expect to leave until the 5:00 one I couldn't believe the Chaos that was at the dock. People , cars and trucks were everywhere trying to geo on the ferry. there is no order to it, if you are in the line don't move for anyone and don't leave the lot area or you will be stuck waiting for the 6:00. We got to the ferry area at 4:05 which was too late for the 4:00 but there is another ferry also at 4:30 on a different carrier, (there seem to only be two) and we were able to slide our way on to the 5:00 one. I asked a guy there he said it was like this every day, never any order to the ferry docks.

It's worth the driveferry ride over though.

Depending on what you want to do, you might also want to consider just ditching the car for the day and taking the people ferry. It makes many more trips each day and is a LOT less of a hassle. There are abundant cabs, and STJ isn't all that big, so getting around is pretty easy. Or, you can rent a new car over there. Obviously, if you turn in your STT car you won't be paying double.

Finally, as Doug mentioned, there are 2 car ferry companies and they don't honor each other's tickets. You have to know which one you are headed toward.

Kinda depends on what you want to do. I was happy to have the rental I went on every road I could all the way until it ended. I didn't see many cabs at all off the main area.. Most cabs went straight to Maegan's bay and that was it. If all you want to see is that then get a cab.

I would guess that a day tour from a cab would be more than $35 with stops and number of people that you have with you.

Heck you already rented the car make use of it. Just make sure the company will let you.

Sorry meant trunk bay that's where all the taxis are. I thought hawknest beach was nice not overcrowded andthere were tables in the shady trees for our lunch. No amenities and it was under construction putting in some new sidewalks.

It will be really nice whenit is done though.

Definitely check with your rental car company and get it in writing! We were told no ferrie or leaving the island by all the national rental care companies, but the local company called Dependable Car Rentals ( http://www.dependablecar.com) told us this in response to an email inquiry about the car ferry:

We allow our cars to be taken to St. John with a few conditions. Be very
careful with your key because if you lose it you will have to come all the
way back to our office on St. Thomas to get another. Also if you have a
flat tire or dead battery over there you are on your own. We can't send a
mechanic over for minor service issues. If you rent a sedan or minivan, you
must be very careful backing up onto the ferry. The ramp can be rather
steep if the tide is high so you have to be careful not to smush up the
muffler.

We opted to leave our car on STT and take the people ferry. Had no problems at all getting cabs to and from the beaches on St. John, and I am a wheelchair user. Wouldn't think it would be hard for walkies to use one of the many cabs to get to and from St. John's beautiful places -- even if it means arranging a pick up time when you get dropped off at an out of the way destination.

BTW, Trunk Bay is spectacular for swimming and snorkeling -- can't recommend it enough.

Have fun! And please post a trip review when you return so we can all share in your adventures.
