I saw that the ferry from St. Thomas to St. Croix is a seasonal thing. We are coming in August. Does the ferry run between the islands during that time of the year?

It would be a shame to miss out on St. Croix since we are staying on St. Thomas for 9 days and I'd like to take my kids over to see St. John and Croix - also, do they have horse back ridding on St. Croix? I see St. Thomas has none.

Thanks.

No, the ferry does not run to St. Croix during that time of the year. Your best bet is to take the seaplane, the only other alternative is Cape Air which I believe is more expensive and uses 9 seat Cessnas. Yes they have horseback riding on St. Croix, you can do that in the rainforest! I haven't done it before, but I heard it's nice.

Does anybody know if any private boat owners offer rides back and forth to St. Croix? Tht seems weird that a ferry would not run year round. The sea plane is so expensive that unless I can find a private boat owner to take us over for the day - we may miss out on visiting over there... 🙁

Check the Seaborne Airlines website. The have many RT fares for $85, which is only a slight mark-up over the fast ferry.

Also the seaplane is a really neat experience. Think of it as another "attraction ride" on the way to the horses. The kids will love it and have something really cool to tell their friends about.

The reason it is expensive is: it is really pretty far (40 miles) and the sea is generally rough. Not many private boats go back and forth for fun!

A fair number of large motor yachts to make the trip across to fuel on St Croix. With the refinery here fuel is considerably cheaper. Can save $12,000 on a fill up.

Maybe you could get lucky and hitch a ride. Beats riding in the back of a pick up.

It comes here to run during our high season as they don't run in the winter to Cape Cod. There it is a suumer season run.

I understand that the Tortola Fast Ferry may do so on a limited basis this summer. Will have to look out for that announcement.

The Boston Harbor Cruises Ferry has never left here because of hurricane season. From it's inception it was built to run from Boston to Cape Cod. They came up wih the idea to come here during their off season in Boston to run and return for their season.
