We will be in St Thomas for a day on a cruise ship in March and are thinking of taking a boat/ferry to Tortola.
We arent scheduled to arrive in ST Thomas until 10am. Any suggestions on which ferry to use? also, ferry list mentions we will have to clear immigration. We have US passports, do we need to do anything else ahead of time?
Thanks for the help.

You won't need anything more than your passports. I just took the ferry American Pride over to Tortola in December.

Yes, you will also need more time. You really won't have any time. By the time you get to Tortola, you'll need to worry about getting back to get to the cruise ship prior to leaving. Won't really work.

Spend the time on the beaches of STT of STJ.

Hi Dotshub,

I agree 100% with promoguy. I really do not think you will not have enough time to enjoy Tortola. The boat ride takes approximately one hour each way and it can take as long as a half hour to clear customs once you arrive on Tortola.

Given your schedule, you probably won't even have time to visit much more than Road Town, and there is a lot more to Tortola than just Road Town.

Have you ever visited STT or STJ?

To learn more about the Ferry service between St Thomas and Tortola you can get schedules and information at the top of this page. See.."ferry schedules".. Just click and read.

It would appear that you would not have any time to tour Tortola, because you would have to almost immediately get on a return ferry to make it to your cruise ship.

You could probably do it, but why?

Enjoy yourself, relax, take the ferry to St John or take a taxi to a beach on St Thomas.

Thanks for the info everyone. We have been to STT/SJ numerous times but only once to Tortola, thats why we were considering the ferry trip there. We are in port in STT until 8pm, which would give us more time to spend on Tortola, but I will have to check the ferry schedules to see how late we can get back.
