Are there private ferries for hire from St. Thomas to St. John?

The trip from Red Hook to STJ is abut 15 minutes.
I know that there are people out there that get a water taxi but for the life of me I don't understand why you would spend all that money for a 15 minute ride.
I could understand it if the ride took over an hour, but not 15 minutes.

The far is $6 per person plus $2.50 a bag

Depending on where you are going, if you want there are private helicopters from St. Thomas to St. John but agree with Xislandgirl - why spend the money?

And the ferry is a true cultural, island experience!

Where on STJ are helicopter services allowed to land ??- [not a medical emergency.]

I have been told exit that they can land at the clinic even if it is not an emergency but the price has to be right - I have never had this confirmed though so I'm not 100%
