Hi everyone,

We will be traveling to St. John for the first time in July. We are coming for a friends wedding. We are staying in a villa for the week. I would like to have an idea of what kind of money i will be spending while i am there. We plan on going to a supermarket to get food in the villa for the week. I would also like to go snorkeling, parasailing and waverunning for one day. Can anyone tell me how much these activities will cost. We will be staying around trunk bay, I do know that!

Thank you!

Your best bet is to go through this message board and see what threads there are about parasailing and waverunning, I don't think there's that much here. There are tons of threads about snorkling however. Basically, you bring your own gear or rent it locally (places listed throughout the threads) and just wade out from one of many, wonderful beaches with coral formations. Again, tons of threads on this and the great resource book listed at the top called STJ Feet, Fins and 4 wheel drive, which is an excellent source for snorkling beaches. Snorkling gear rental isn't too bad, maybe under $20 a day, maybe less, check the messages.
Money wise, this is a great message board, along with the relocation board, on what food costs. Food, particularly basics like milk and bread and cereal, snack foods are very, very expensive. Liquor isn't luckily, just a buck or two more than at home for wine and a six pack. You'll see lots of examples of what people spend but be prepared to figure out how much you spend at home for such and such and double the price anyway, maybe more. The quality of fresh produce is pretty poor overall, except for local fruits. On STJ, there are no big supermarkets, just markets in Cruz Bay so don't go looking for Shaws, Stop and Shop, etc. You could freeze meats and bring them down and you could shop in STT first if you want to lug stuff over on the ferry. You will LOVE STJ!

VI Watersports changes $65 to parasail and $12 for observers in the boat. Two people going up togethe is $130. You are in the air for about 10 minites. http://www.viwatersports.com/parasail.htm

Waverunners are $75 /hr or $90/hr for a two person runner.

What you spend per day is going to vary with your taste and habits. A rule of thumb grocery budget is $50/pp per day.

Which villa?

Bren- was just in Cruz Bay on Tues., milk was 7.00/gallon. That was at a market just up from the ferry dock. Gas on STJ was 309 gal. 285 in Redhook/CA. Now home in Seattle area, and paying less, but wishing we were still in VI!!

If you want to save money on food, pack a cooler and check is as one of your bags (who needs two bags for shorts anyway). Buy all your meats and anything else you can fit in the cooler before you get to St. John and you'll save a ton. Just make sure you wrap it in a baggage strap because they'll search it before it goes on the plane and you can't have it taped.
