Hi guys one more question. When we have come to St. John in the past we usually stock up on groceries at Starfish Market. I have heard about the food center on St. Thomas and was wondering if that is a better place to stock up before we even come across on the ferry. Also, I heard it is like a BJs or Sam's club do you need to be a member to go there? If the food center is not the best deal, then where is? Thanks again.

Hey there! Food Center is on the East End and is more like a regular grocery store! We DO have Cost-U-Less, which is more like Sam's Club and no, you don't have to be a member! Most St. Johnians usually come to STT by car to load up, not sure it would be too easy if you are taking the poeple ferry! Good luck in whatever you decide! Just remember, you are on vacation! Since you are staying on STJ, I more than likely would not stop in STT for stuff unless I am taking the car barge! 🙂

We prefer to stock up at the Food Center before taking the car barge to STJ. The prices are better and we find that it is a convenient way to go for us.

The Food Center is fine for canned goods, packaged items, but I do not recommend them for produce or meats. For those, Marina Market across from the ferry dock, or stop at Cost-U-Less.

I second Cost-U-Less and also recommend Plaza Xtra which is in the Tutu Park Mall but not Food Center on the East End which is not only a bit dodgey where fresh veggies and meats are concerned but whose prices are generally quite a bit higher than the alternatives.

When coming from STT airport to Red Hook for the STJ ferry, you can either take the route which takes you through Frenchman's Bay, etc and passes by Food Center and Marina Market or the other route which takes you up Raphune Hill and then to Weymouth Rhymer Highway where Cost U Less and Tutu Park Mall are en route. Equidistant.

I second the caution on meat or fish purchased at Food Center. I spent $40 for 2 lbs of swordfish. When I went to prepare it the next day, it smelled awful. I should have asked to smell it before they wrapped it up. It was an expensive lesson to learn.

Sean:

Listen to East Ender & STT Resident. We're part time residents and only shop at Marina Market (meats, dairy), Cost-U-Less (most other items) and Plaza Extra (for the things we can't find elsewhere).

Ditto on the Marina Market.. We shop here for just about everything while on Island. Produce, Bakery and Meat/Fish always fresh and good selection. Booze is cheaper than Food center and a plus is it's right next to the ferry dock in Red Hook. It's an easy walk unless you need a mule or better yet Donkey to pack your stuff. Don't know what Ferry charge is for one of these though....

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the info, it was really helpful. I think I am going to head for Cost U Less to stock up. Is the liquor/beer/wine there the same general price as at Havensight?

Sean:

I've found the liquor prices to be less at Cost-U-Less.

when shopping a Marina Market, make sure you check your receipt!! We were charged $48 for a dozen eggs! Good thing we looked at the receipt before leaving the parking lot. Their scanner charged us for an entire case instead of a dozen. Lady at the counter was very nice about it, we had good laugh over it.

Mamie:

The Marina Market is directly accross the street from the ferry dock in Red Hook. Look for a gas station....it's right next door.
