We are staying at Gallows Point on St John for a week this summer and have 6 people who want to go to St Croix for the day. Can we rent a boat, how long a ride is it, what is the water like. Any thoughts / suggestions would be great.

You can not rent a boat from STJ that I am aware of.

You have to take the ferry to STJ and then the seaplane. The ferry from STT is no longer running, they say it will be back up in the spring, but even if it does, it usually has limited or no service in the summer.

Take into account that you will have an hour to get to the seaplane/ferry. The ferry takes about 90 min. and is 90 roundtrip so you will have 2 1/2 hours each way.

There is a bar on STJ with slots, if they really want to gamble. There is only one casino (that I know of) on STX and if memory serves, it is not all that great.

It would be hugely expensive if you could even find someone to take you, and a very rough ride over open seas. Even when the STT-STX ferry was running it was referred to locally as, "The Barf Barge" or "the Vomit Comet" and a brown bag was included in the fare! (td)

You have to take the ferry to STJ and then the seaplane.

From St John you take the ferry to St Thomas and then taxi to either the airport or the seaplane terminal. Seaborne airlines or Cape Air are the best bets.

Confusing! There is no ferry.

There are also VLTs all over St Thomas.

It's an expensive proposition to go to STX just for a day and really not worth it for a few hours of gambling.

STT resident, thanks for the STJ---> STT correction, just a typing error caused by posting before my coffee.

But your other comment about my post was not confusing at all, actually my comment was very clear

"The ferry from STT is no longer running, they say it will be back up in the spring, but even if it does, it usually has limited or no service in the summer."

There is no ferry right now, but even the VINOW ferry page says it will be running in the Spring. While I doubt that will happen, I thought it best to give the poster the information available on this page.
