We are planning on staying at Maho Bay on St. John in late January/early February. We'd like to find an easy way to visit The Baths on Virgin Gorda. We know that we can take the ferry, but we'd like to try to arrive before the crowds in the morning, and it would be a long trip via the ferry.

There will be either three or six of us (some friends are meeting us at Maho, but I'm not sure if they will join us for the trip to The Baths). Any ideas on how to get there? Can we rent a private power boat, with or without a captain? Are there any scheduled trips other than the ferry?

Thanks!

Joan

We rent a 28 ft boat from OceanRunner, http://oceanrunner.vi/ if you are nautical you can drive it yourself, this is what we do and my husband loves it. You can also rent with a captain, they are fun and fast. You can rent them at 8am so you will get there before the crowds. They also have a bigger boat you can rent with a captain, if your splitting it between couples, it's not too bad. We also go to Jost on our way back from the Baths, that is always fun too.

Hi there,

I highly recommend taking this boat (borntorhumb.com). Seven of us went on a day trip with Captain Kevin last April and it was awesome! Kevin will take you anywhere you want to go, the boat is very fast and comfortable, Kevin is a 25 year veteran of these waters and his first mate, Andy, led the snorkeling expeditions. We had a fabulous day and we are doing it again next April!

Hi Joan,

You might also want to consider St. John Dive Adventures out of Coral Bay. Although they are a dive operation, they often do private groups including snorkeling to the BVI destinations. The boat and Captain Larry make for a great outing.

I highly recommend Limnos Charters (limnoscharters.com), the BVI trip. My husband and I booked a day long excursion with them that included The Baths, snorkeling at "The Caves" on Norman Island (snorkeling gear was included), lunch and an open bar. We joined approximately 20-25 other people. We never felt "crowded". We are planning on doing it again this summer with our four children.
