Going to be stopping in St. Thomas on a cruise in January 2011. I want to go to St. John for the day. My problem is I dock at 7am and leave at 5:00. The ferry leaving St John back to St. Thomas leaves to late for my ship departure. Any ideas on how I can get there and make it back in time so I don't miss the ship! Help!!

There is a STJ to STT ferry every hour from Cruz Bay STJ to Red Hook STT ---- every hour on the hour!!

No worries, like exit says, take the Red Hook ferry. It leaves every hour on the hour from both St. Thomas to St. John. For more detailed info, go to the link on the upper right hand corner of this page that says "Ferry Schedule". Enjoy!

You will be fine but plan on being on the ferry to Red Hook no later than the 3pm departure as that will put you back to the ship between 4pm and 4:20pm (depending where the ship is docked and traffic)

Hi ! Planning a trip to St. John mid January. Worried about the ferry from St. Thomas to St. John.... I get motion sickness and was wondering if the ferry ride will be rough. I have heard it called the "barf barge".Or is this the barge from St. Croix to St John? Can someone help me with an answer ? Will taking dramamine help or motion sickness medication keep me from getting sick ? Help ! Thanks all.

Barf Barge is the STT to STX ferry 🙂 The ferry to STJ is a short 10-15 mins and is usually quite smooth - I get motion sick when on cruise ships but no problem on the ferry

Thanks Pia. That makes me feel a whole lot better. We will definitely fly into St. Thomas and take the ferry instead of trying to fly into St. Croix and trying to find a ferry to St. John. Really looking forward to this trip.

You wouldn't fly into STX to get to STJ anyway - they're a LONG way away from each other! If you're in the least bit prone to seasickness I'd take a small dose of motion sickness medication to be on the safe side. Enjoy your visit!

Honestly if you only have from 7a-5p you will be rushed all day to try and go to St John and shopping in St Thomas.
To go to St John u will have to taxi to red hook, wait for the ferry, then ferry ride to St John, then taxi to a beach. Then to return you will have to taxi from the beach, to the ferry, catch the ferry, ferry back to St Thomas, taxi to the ship.
You can do it but you will be spending your precious time and money just transporting to and from and being worried about the time.

When I was on ship I would choose a nice beach on St Tom and go to the beach right away in the morning, then go back to the ship for a quick lunch and change clothes and shop until departure time. There is shopping downtown and at Havensight.

If you do go to St John I would take the 3pm ferry at the latest-I would not chance the 4pm ferry if you ships leaves at 5pm. Rember the ship will leave on time!
