Is this new condo (ugly condos) the first thing you see coming into St. John on the ferry on the right hand side or is it over one hill? Havent been back since these were built, would like to know ahead of time what to expect.

Yes, Grande Bay is on the right just past Gallows Point as the ferry approaches Cruz Bay.

Doubt you could mistake Grande Bay Condos for any of the other architectural masterpieces on the Cruz Bay skyline -- with the historical Caribbean flavor and design elements - it seems to fit in perfectly with the hip roof West Indian style of STJ - the size and facade seem to exemplify all that is special into the unique waterfront of St John and they will just be visible on the right side of town as the ferry brings you to what used to be considered the jewel of Virgin Island living.
Luckily people seem to love these new STJ accommodations and the wonderful island influence they inspire so it looks to be the future of new development - local real estate companies all seem to love the concept too. And the local zoning and coastal zone officials have endorsed the changes along with the economic benefits for all.

You will not be able to miss it.... As you come in on the ferry, it is the very large concrete development to the right of Wharside Village.

I'm with you. I guess the only good thing about it is that you don't really notice it unless you are on the water. Even when you drive by it, it is so tall that all you notice is a big wall of concrete. Once you are on island, you probably won't notice it unless you are one of the very unfortunate people who have a home near it. I cannot even imagine how angry the people are who lost their view because of this development. It is a far cry from the large grassy knoll it once was.

On the other side, I do see why some people like to stay there. I hear that most of the units are very nice, and it is a short walk to everything in town. I know several part time residents who have stayed there, and they seem to like it. Fact of it is, it's there, and I'd rather see it occupied than sit empty. We currently have two "dead" developments....and as much as I may disagree with them, it is still worse seeing them half completed and unoccupied.

I was sure the irony sarcasm and venom was dripping -- It could hardly be more blatant -- maybe click on profile and read all my posts.
But people continue to rent them, extol their virtues, and assure the mostly off island owners of financial success --- if you really don't want this style of development to be the future of STJ simply do not support them by renting the units.

The other two are Sirenusa and Pond Bay. Neither one of them are active at the moment. Pond Bay (Chocolate Hole) was supposed to start back up in April, but still nothing going on there. I haven't heard a word about Sirenusa in a long time.

Here is an older picture of Sirenusa, it doesn't look much different, but town sure looks different!!! It's the development up on the hill beyond Cruz Bay.

Here is a picture of Pond Bay. It is further along than this picture, but there hasn't been any activity on the site for about a year.

We toured two Grande Bay Units in early June and they were beautiful inside. The massive size of the complex stands out of proportion to the rest of the buildings on the Cruz Bay waterfront, but they are not ugly in design. Read reviews on Trip Advisor or VRBO and everything is quite positive on balance. I will consider staying there on a future visit because of their close-to-town location and waterfront location.

I absolutely, sincerely and deeply hope that is not the mantra in STJ.

Zero: I believe that is the mantra of a segment of humanity everywhere. Some people look at an expanse of seashore or mountain or rolling hills and say, "Ahh..." and others think of how they can develop it. That is why we have a land and water use plan... Oh, oops! I forgot, we don't have a land and water use plan.:$)
