I'll be vacationing in St Croix in February and will have a full kitchen. Can you recommend the most affordable place to do grocery shopping? Where do the locals shop?
Also, How reliable is the bus service. Anything I should know? Im female, traveling solo.
Great hearing about all of your plans to relocate and the support you are all providing to each other. Gives me faith that I might actually have to guts to do it someday!
Im a psychiatric nurse and 20 yr bartender. I live in RI, the beautiful ocean state but the winters are getting tough!

Hello Patricia,

On St. Croix you might try Plaza Extra for general grocery shopping. Maybe K-mart for other items you might need.

Bus service is not very reliable, but if used in conjunction with the $2 safari buses (ask a resident maybe at your hotel how this works and where to wait for it and the route) you should make out fine for the main routes. For anything some what outside of the two main towns you will need a car - which you might rent for a couple days so you can explore the East End and the northshore areas which are worth driving through and also to visit some of the attractions that are not in the main towns.

Patricia, I think half of New England must be living here! We know several couples. I know you are concerned about safety, but use ordinary caution and you will be fine. Where are you staying?

Not too far from where you will be staying you will find "Food Town" in La Grande Princesse. It is a local medium sized store with good meat and produce. Just east of there at 5 corners you will find a Pueblo Market. However Plaze Extra (several locations) has the the best price and quality in general.

I WOULD NEVER BE ON ST CROIX (or st thomas or st john for that matter)... WITHOUT A CAR.....

Yup, you would definitely need a car. You could walk to Food Town and Pueblo, it's less than a mile from where you're at, but it would be inconvenient if you were carrying a lot of groceries. St. Croix just cannot be seen and experienced the right and proper way without a rental car.

Coincidentally, I live in both St. Croix and Rhode Island. I was born and raised on St. Croix, but go to Brown University in Providence. By the way, what route are you flying here by? Are you leaving from Boston or Providence? Just curious.
