Hello Everyone...I know this topic has been discussed before, but I neglected to write it down and would appreciate any help. We are traveling to STT June 2nd staying at Elysian (sp). I would like to know where the best place is to get grocery's, wanting to save as much $ as possible if we need to go further out that is ok with us if it makes sense with taxi fares. Any other info regarding important info would be greatly appreciated such as fun places to go, and if anyone can tell me about the Cruzan Rum Distillery in St. Croix. This will be our first time to USVI. I need to say it is so useful to have this forum, I have learned so much! Thanks in advance

106 was for the thurs-monday and it was with all taxes and fees. i did not do another driver so i was not sure how much that would be. I did the entertainment book special, so that was the total. when i had to add 1 more day (tues) bc our flight was delayed one day it bumped it up to 160. so i bid price line and got if for 140 in the end from 5/31-6/4. Also price line has insurance for $11 a day if you want it. my auto insurance covers rental insurance so i did not opt for the extra insurance.

Thanks for the info on grocery stores. We are staying at the Frenchman's Cove. How close are Plaza Extra and Cost U Less from that resort? On a related issue, there are going to be 8 of traveling...how critical is it to rent a car? Is it crazy to think we could taxi around for shopping?

The taxi rates are posted right here on this site and here's the link:

https://www.vinow.com/stthomas/getting_around_stt/taxi_stt/

CostULess is in Market Square East which is about a ten minute drive from Frenchman's and the cost per person each way by taxi is $10 for a single and $8 for 2+ people. Plus additional for packages which can't be carried on your lap. Plaza is further up on the same road in Tutu Park Mall and the fare is $9/$7. As you can see, these fares add up very fast. Just to get from Frenchman's to Havensight which is 5 minutes away will cost minimum $4 per person. There is a Pueblo supermarket in the Havensight area. You can gather from this why we recommend renting a vehicle to get around!

There are so many beautiful beaches (way nicer than those at the Cove or the Reef) on St Thomas, so many restaurants to choose from and so much to see that, in my opinion, visitors who don't rent a vehicle are really short-changing themselves. Not everyone wants to do the same as everyone else at any particular time, renting a vehicle which will hold 8 is pretty much impossible and your best bet is to either split the use of one vehicle or rent two. You don't need a Jeep or 4WD to get around STT - a compact is just fine - and as long as you don't rent from Hertz which doesn't allow their vehicles to go to St John, you can pack up your car and go over on the barge to St John to explore even more lovely spots at your leisure. The link to the ferry schedule is top right this page under, "Quick Links".

Hope that helps a little.

One of the perks of staying Frenchman's is the down town ferry and Havana Blue at morningstar beach. Check with the concierge.
II really like the Reef. But would rent a car for sure.
