Silly question, probably answered before...but at least it doesn't deal with Kenny and Renee...;)

My wife and I will be bringing my 12 year old daugter to STT the 2nd week of August. I was wondering about getting my daughter's hair braided. I know from past visits we can find hair braiders all over the islands but I've never asked how much it would cost. What's the going rate for a medium to long length haircut?

Next up, are there any places to get tatoos on STT or STJ (for me, not the daughter...heh). 🙂

Countdown has commenced...sweeeet!

There are two tattoo parlors in Havensight. The hair braidors(sp?) charge per braid. Don't know the going rate. There are a few of them at Vendor's Plaza.

In September of 2003 my husband and I got matching tattoos on our backs (palm tree on tiny island )... I can't remember the name of the place, it was on STT on the same side and almost beside the tram. I remember going up a small incline to the parking in front of it and we had to walk up a flight of steps. It was in a building with other businesses. We were pleased and the girl that did them was very professional. It was my first and only - I think my husband wants another when we go back this month.... Oh, if you've never had one before be sure to read up on the care, etc. Go ahead and pack a tube of A&D ointment and bandages. You will want to get the tattoo the last day you are there - you can't get in the water, etc. for several weeks after getting one. Have fun with that... maybe you can get your wife to get a smaller matching one!

Hello Jay,

$1, $1.50, $2 per braid, the latter I think is the most commonly quoted for middle-long hair and then you might get them to come down to $1.50 depending on how many braids are wanted. If your daughter wants a section of her hair braided some hair braiders will make thin braids thus requiring more braids to complete the section and cost you more money. So if your daughter is doing a large section of hair have an idea of how thick you want the braids to be and ask how many braids the hair braider thinks it will take to do that section of hair. One other tip: When putting in braids there are parts made in the hair, apply some sunblock down the part or else expect a miserable sunburn on the scalp.

Ditto on the tatoo information given.

My daughter got her hair braided on Sapphire beach by Rashida. She's an extremely pleasant lady who used to sit just outside of the gift shop. We paid $2 per braid. This was 3 yrs ago. My daughter was 4 at the time - and hated to sit still so long - so Rashida let us diving the braiding into 2 sessions. She was one of the nicest people I've met on STT. She even sang songs to my D while she did her hair....songs she made up on the spot about my daughter and her hair. I think she said she also owns a restaurant on the island....so she cooks at night and braids during the day.

Holy cow! $2.00 per braid??? I may as well buy her fine diamond jewelry in STT instead...might save a few dollars. 🙂

Thanks for the tat info too. Wife already has one on her ankle and warned me about the sun and water if I get one. Thinking about getting a leeezard on my lower leg. 🙂 Definately will be on the final day of the trip if I do it.

What's the age requirement for getting a tattoo/body piercing in the virgin islands? Is it 18 like the mainland, or is it more lenient (since the drinking age is 18 and barely enforced..)

Another suggestion on the hair braiding: I got 2 words for you: "Lady Rainbow"... she is usually in the Vendor's Plaza...

I thought I'd jump in here and just mention a few things to those who don't have tatoos and want to get them...

1 - you DO NOT want to get any ink on vacation. You cant go in the water, and you cant expose it to strong sunlight. It will be a major hinderance to you. Also, do not forget that tatooing is an invasive procedure. Personally, I would NEVER get any work from a place that I had not thouroghly checked out, seen their work first-hand, hung around the shop etc. If you choose the wrong place, the best case scenario is you get a crappy tatoo that you have to live with, maybe some scarring. Worst case scenario you get a disease.

If you want a tatoo, please ask around, do your homework, and speak with a local artist that is willing to take the time to discuss what you want. You may pay a little more for this type of service, but amortized over the life of the tatoo, it is nothing.

-for the question about age...if you arn't 18 think really hard about going somewhere that doesn't have an age restriction to work. This lack of regulation will surely cause other facets of the business to be subpar. If rules are lax, you don't want it. The risks are too great. Wait till you are 18 and go to a quality establishement in the states.

for the record both myself and my wife have a number of tatoos, it is most certainly a big deal.
