We have visited St. John at least 20 times and have always flown out of Newark to STT. We are thinking about changing it up next year and seeing if we can take a cruise out of Bayonne/New York to St. Thomas and then stay on STJ for 2 weeks, then return to STT and cruise back. Has anyone ever done this? Is it possible to do this?

It is probably possible -- certainly it would have to be done through the cruise ship line and maybe a travel agent with some contacts in that industry would be an asset if you can't get it done yourself. It might be advantageous to ask if San Juan is a turnaround option as more ships homeport there these days.

I don't know for sure, but have sailed on a cruise (many times) out of San Juan with STT being the last stop and disembarked here - you do pay full cruise fare, you need the captains permission before sailing to disembark at a different port than "normal", you have no say as to what time you would like to disembark and you are escorted to Customs with all of your luggage (no porter service available so if you are a cruiser that takes 5 suitcases (I'm not) it could be interesting :)) before allowed on your way. I "think" it is possible but you will pay for the full weeks cruise even if you only are sailing from STT on your second cruise for a few days - if that makes sense.

I could be wrong but I do think that although you CAN make arrangements to disembark on, for instance, STT, you won't be able to re-embark at any port other than the turnaround port. In other words you can find out which cruise lines do their turnaround in St Juan, come into St Thomas and disembark, ferry over to StJ for your vacation and then will probably have to fly back home from STT.

I don't know whether that would be cost effective but, as exit zero points out, it's an arrangement you have to research directly with the cruise ship lines or a knowledgeable travel agent. Good luck and we'd certainly be interested in hearing what you learn!

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to cruise out of NY area and spend nearly 2 days in the cold on a boat, also risking running into a storm at sea when you can just fly right down and be there in a couple hours rather than waste vacation time on the boat? BTW which airline flies direct from Newark, because I'm becoming unhappy with AA which I use for my direct from JFK.

I've always used AA direct JFK-STT, but I'm becoming intrigued by the Delta non-stop out of JFK. For my August flight it's a little cheaper than American. The taxes and fees charged by Delta are much lower than those charged by AA as well. I wonder how that's possible. Has anyone flown the Delta non-stop JFK to St. Thomas?

Continental used to be non-stop to STT from Newark, but I'm not sure if that's still true.

We are flying from St Thomas to JFK in May on our return flight. We only have a 35 min layover in New York to make our next flight.

We just were looking for a change of pace and have never cruised before. Last flight out of Newark we had a catastrophic engine failure and had to return. Everything turned out ok, but the hubby isn't must into flying. We will be flying direct out of Newark in March again though, Continental does a EWR - STT direct. Usually leaves at 9:30 but this time they moved the time up to 7:30 which is great because we will have a lot more time on island the first day of the trip.
