We visit St. Thomas every year and stay on the East End. Every year we see progress made in Red Hook Construction, but it never seems to have an end. Any update?

It's an Island Ting you know. I can tell you the ferry terminal was in great shape last Feb. Still a lot of work on the project across the street and road in the area. Nice to get to the terminal a little early and enjoy a cocktail at the new Bar. Restroom facilitie's are very nice as well. Parking was still hit or miss even with the new area within the terminal.

The ferry terminal and the office building across the street are both finished.

Too bad the road is so bad. I've never been down to STT without trying to get through those pot holes that you can almost fit a car into too.

Extra parking across the street from the ferry is great!

There are some new parking rules in Red Hook that are a result of a young woman being struck and killed. Also there is a salt pond walk. But the big construction is done. Now they just need to firgure out what to do about the road

What happened to the young woman? Was she a local? I always see the school girls walking along there. It looks dangerous.

We saw the picture of the girl, right at the entrance to Duffy's Love Shack parking lot.

This is the story I heard from a local....She was arguing with a boyfriend and she stepped out onto the road and was hit by a car. The driver didn't know what he/she had hit and back up over her again. I'm sorry to have to even type this.

There is a memorial there. She was a beautiful white gal/blonde hair. It's really a sad thing to see because we've been through a similar situation.

The newly completed buildings look great. Now they have to get something in there besides the two banks to make it a paying operation. As for the young lady that was killed, our hearts go out to the family and boyfriend. She worked at Current Cut and was a sweetheart. As for fighting with her boyfriend, I have no knowledge and don't think any of us should speculate. It is always tragic when someone is cut down in the prime of their life regardless of when and where.

How long ago was the accident?

The accident was 4-5 months ago as I recall and the driver of the vehicle which struck her was, to the best of my knowledge, not charged. Yes, it was some sort of an altercation with a boyfriend, yes she had drunk too much and yes she ran out into the road and was hit and dragged resulting in her most unfortunate death at such a young age.

I would add that she's not the first newbie to die here at a young age. She is just one of, unfortunately, many over several years. I have stories which will curl your hair but some of the involved miscreants have escaped prosecution because they run legitimate businesses and, although they run a sideline drug trade after hours; cover their arses very well!

As far as the rest of the wonderful Red Hook development is concerned, I foresee it all becoming an enormous Great White Elephant. The development and it's effect on the road has, sorry, "sucked" for a long time and continues to "suck." Island Roads patches regularly but, when you just put in tar without taking care of the base, it all reams out in short shrift and thus Island Roads continues to make money, especially where Federal funds are concerned. Andy, I don't think you're a bad guy but you know how to work the system!

I doubt Andy reads anything on forums ...

Cheers!

STT, I don't think there's every been a time when we've been down to STT, that those holes weren't there. This time, they were really bad. I think they need to dig up that part of the road and just do it over. Obviously, patching it isn't working. There definetly is a problem.

The rest of the roads on STT aren't bad at all.

Driving on the roads of St Thomas reminds me of all the pot holes I am trying to leave behind in the frozen Northeast.

Connie: The rains of Omar definitely made for some new holes. The pot hole crews have been doing a marvelous job, but I think there are a couple of areas where they are waiting to solve the underlying problem.

And Marcy, I forgot to mention that the construction is now focused on the Mandela Circle/Yacht Haven Grande area where the road people are working to, well, I guess we'll see when they are done...;)

Yeah East,....there seems to be an underlying problem there with water. Hopefully, they'll figure it out.

I'm very familiar with the pot hole/craters you guys are talking about but they do slow the traffic at this very dangerous section of the road. Too bad there weren't a few more up by Molly Malones.
