I am getting conflicting information about exactly how far of a drive it is to Cruz Bay. I read 20-25 minutes and then I was told 35 minutes. I have this as a potential villa rental cause Honey LOVES Coral Bay and I can handle 20-25 but 35 I think is a little too out of the way for as much as we like to come and go. Any ideas?

this was on this forum from 2005.

I think it took us about 25 to 30 minutes to get back to Cruz Bay on Centerline Road. We loved staying near Coral Bay and couldn't imagine staying near Cruz Bay with "all of the people!" It was so quiet come evening with just the sounds of nature. Occasionally we could hear music coming up from Island Blues, but you had to listen closley for it.

There's not really much of a difference between 25-35. You are in the islands, who cares!

There will be 8 of us that will be staying at Coral Rays starting June 3,07. We can hardly wait, I didn't think the island of St. John was that big, it must be the roads and the driving conditions that make traveling around the island so time consuming. We are going to rent one of the safari trucks for all of us, seems as though it is pretty dangerous to drive scooters on the island. Have a great time

Monica - St. John isn't very big, but none of the roads are straight or flat (you'll see!), that's why it takes longer than you'd think it would. I wouldn't consider a scooter on St. John! In fact I doubt you can get one on the islandn

Yes, it's all the tight hairpin turns and hold your breath, close your eyes, OMG shouting white nuckle hills. Going into a hairpin and up a white nuckle at the same time were my personal thrillers. Hope you guys have a great time! Be sure to do a trip report when you return. I'd love to hear about your time at Coral Rays!:-)

I don't know exactly where Coral Rays is or what the roads/driveways are like. Some villas might be quite a thrill to reach in a safari truck. Here's a link to a video that gives you a sense of what some roads are like on STJ:

It's me again, just found out it is only 8 miles from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay, and it does take 30 minutes.

Hey Monica,

I would call Destination St John and ask if it is possible to drive to Coral Rays in a Safari Truck (find out if it has 4 wheel drive or not 🙂 ) Depending on the access road you may want to rent 2x4 wheel drive vehicles, it's better to be safe than sorry.
ps: I drive these roads every day and if you enter from the access road on the Coral Bay side (not the Bordeaux mountain side which may be easier) you probably will definitely want a 4 wheel drive.
