Planing a trip to St.Thomas in October. We were there in Oct. of 2005 for the first time. We loved it!!! Stayed at Sapphire right on the beach, but now I'm not so sure that we should go back there.

Could someone just, please tell me where the best place to stay would be? I'm so confused at this point, after reading all the posts.

Don't know the budget but if I didn't live here I'd stay at Elysian or Secret Harbour. For more of a hotel feel, I'd stay at Morning Star.

Me too. I stay at Sapphire every time I go. I have been twice since June and am going back in May. You can't beat it for the price, location and beach. I just don't know why you would NOT want to stay there. There are MANY condos to choose from too. On the hill is great and there are more than a few great people to rent from right on the beach. Not to mention alot of day sails and power boat trips leave RIGHT OUT of the marina on property. I have never rented from the resort directly though. I always rent from someone that owns their own condo. Always a better deal and better room. Leticia

There's been alot of talk on these boards about Sapphire Beach...the condos on the beach and the condos up on the hill.

We rented last May from someone who owned up on the hill.

Yes, Sapphire Beach is great to stay at. It's convenient to Red Hook, it has beautiful views and the beach is great. Fabulous snorkeling.

The only thing you REALLY have to be aware of is the problems that the place has been having. Restaurants closed down, the ducks in the pool (and also pooping in it) and making SURE that you rent from somebody who keeps their place up to date.

Our unit was the highest one up on the hill, and again, we loved the location, but wouldn't rent there again for the above problems. We also weren't thrilled with the way our condo was portrayed. Newly renovated is great to hear when you're renting, but it wasn't what we thought it would be. Especially, the bedspread , which if it was mine would of been used as a cover for the rugs if i was painting. Yes, that bad. Also, I love cats and it just broke my heart to see how many cats are strays there and how hungry they seem. At the least, they should trap and fix these cats so they don't continue to multiply.

If you have a really great place that you can rely on and you don't care about having restaurants right there on the grounds, then I'd say go for it. I just wasn't going to bring back our party of 9 this time because of the problems.

I will not stay there at the resort again - unless I can have some kind of preview to show me that it has seriously improved. On my last stay, I experienced: lightbulbs that didn't work, dirty bathroom, missing cylinder lock in sliders - making a whitsling noise everytime the wind blew (which was ALWAYS), leaking a/c that made a puddle on the floor, hard to get towels and wash cloths, nasty/lumpy pillows that felt like someone stuffed rolled socks into the pillowcase and called it a pillow, duck poop in the pool that collected in the corners and made a green bubbly foam (four in our party wound up needing antibiotics for ear infections - 2 went to E/R - I cannot prove that this was due to Sapphire's pool - but those in our party who didn't drunk under the pool surface didn't get infections - and other guests reported the same and shared their antibiotics with us until we could get prescriptions filled), a restaurant that was so innatentive that it took 30 minutes and serious aggression to get a drink order taken......

The beach is beautiful. The rooms have amazing views. The opper level rooms seem to be better maintained.

Hi,

Don't want to start anything on this great board, but how are they justifying the price this year with no amenities. We usually go twice a year and try to stay at SH, we have not been able to get in twice and stayed a Sapphire in a beach front suite. This year we were down in early Dec. and went over to walk the beach and check out the situation and it was like a ghost town. Sorry we will not be staying there again until they get this situation corrected.
Which is really sad because they have a beautiful beach.

I think Sapphire resort was undercharging for their rooms in the first place. Without any of the amenities, perhaps the rate is more accurately priced. The rack rates were always discounted with coupons and such. I always got the Entertainment discount - 50% off the room rate. I would pay something like $129/nt for a beachfront suite. It was too inexpensive for that resort. I wish they had charged more and kept up the place - and maintained better staff. The front desk people and bar staff were wondeful. The housekeeping staff were horrible. On my last stay, the man in front of me at the lobby desk was checking out to go to another hotel (he had just checked in and saw the room). This was the year I decided not to return - my room was so poorly kept.

I love Sapphire beach. I hate the resort!!! It has bad service(when you get any). It has no restauraunts or bars... Basically the place is becoming a broken down wreck. Stay somewhere else by night and visit the beach by day..
