There's a few things I need help with:

Should I wait for good airfare from Phila, or should I go with the 480.00 they are charging now. I look at the seats and almost the whole plane is available.

Planning on getting 2 small cars. The "kids" will be in one and the "adults" in the other.

Is the consensus that we should bring food along with us? Can we cook our meatballs/frozen with us? And, other dishes already cooked? Is that allowed?

I need any help I can get since I've turned into the travel agent.

Thanks for any help at all..this will be a long process.

I don't know what airfare usually runs from there but in July ours was $590 each from DFW so your price sounds pretty good to me. Airfare usually gets more expensive as you get closer to departure so I'd watch out for that too!

Wow...That sounds good. We are driving 5 hours down to Boston to get a $480 fare so that would be something I'm sure I'd jump on. Also...considering a good amount of the ticket is taxes and security fees, the base fare is probably only in the 300's or so. I'd say go for it and start counting down.

We got $330 airfares from Providence for January. Just checked the fares again (an obsession!) and they are up to $696. We are renting 2 cars (bringing our 3 20 something kids) and are definately sending ahead a box of dry goods and bringing meat! Plan on using the money we save on food for day trips, dingys and day sails!

Hi, Wondering if you used Spirit out of PVD? We thought about driving about another 1 1/2 hours down past Boston, but the Boston flight was direct and hopefully no schedule changes this time. Didn't want to spend more time in other airports...

Connie:

I don't know when you're traveling, but........

Have you tried Spirit out of Atlantic City?

We just booked for September and got a $143. one way fare (+ taxes) or $346. Round Trip with taxes. (also received a one for one free offer after we take our flight - this was a one day special which gives us a $286. credit for our next flight.

Even without the free offer you'd save $136. each or $1,088 for eight people. January fares are running about $190. each way plus taxes.

Hope this helps.

F.I.

First I must share my experience with airfares. We were going to book a trip February vacation week (Feb 19), not by choice, but due to schedule. Luckily we were able to change to the week before. I began tracking this airfare around March.

Well, let me tell you how much the airlines price gouge for popular weeks. We booked the flight DIRECT from Boston for $489. If you took this exact same flight the next week, the fare MORE THAN TRIPLED to $1500. Even a 2 stop flight was around $1100. I understand paying a premium for certain weeks, but to more than triple the fare should be illegal.

Now that I am done ranting, your fare sounds pretty good. I too obsess over fares, and the old adage is to book early, and 9 times out of 10 it works out for the best. The only exception is the "discount" airlines, like Jetblue, Spirit, Southwest, who only post their fares a few months in advance. I believe only Spirit flies to St. Thomas. These airlines will from time to time come out with some major deals, but it seems the big airlines fares don't change all that much in my experience.

Any meat you take in a cooler is supposed to be frozen. We take a cooler full of meat every year, and I use dry ice (there are restrictions on how much you can take) and coolie packs to keep it frozen. Doing this helps make St. John an affordable trip for my husband and me. Good luck.

I'd grab that airfare NOW! We are meeting family in San Juan coming from Philly and they are paying close to that, but they booked almost 11 mos in advance. I think the prices have doubled now for their travel time which is in 3 mos.

I'm just waiting for Spirit to come in with their rates because I know they are lower then anybody from Atlantic City. If not, it's US Airways (although I've had bad experiences with them.) US Air have direct flights.

Just saw your post about air from Philly. I was checking out fares frm PHL to STT in April 2007, and saw that the one daily non-stop USAirways was gone!!!! don't know when that happened, but looks as tho we will have to go thru Charlotte!

WE booked on US Air. We used them last year and everything went like clockwork. We change planes in Charlotte. The non stop from Boston would have been a choice, but they only fly on weekdays and we wnated to maximize our vacation time. I checked the airfare yesterday and it's now 600+.
