How does one visit the Virgin Islands very cheaply? I would be flying into St. John, and would like to keep my accomodations very cheap. Are there hostels? Is it possible to find hotels anywhere in VI for less than or around $50 a night?

You can camp out on Cinnamon Beach Campground for $27...bring you own tent....or like $50 for a tent they supply....or $70 for one of their cottages. Can't get much cheaper than that. Liik it up on their web site.

The VI is not cheap. No hostels. In the off-season you can stay in one of the eco-tents at Maho for $56 for one, $75 for two people. Bringing your own tent to Cinnamon Bay is probably the cheapest option. You could also bring your own tent and camp at Vie's for pretty cheap, but you'd really need a vehicle.

And if you have tickets to fly into St. John, you won't get there! Maybe St. Johns , Antigua. No flights into St. John, USVI
Least expensive places to stay in St. John are at the Inn at Tamarind Court or maybe Samuel's Cottages. Also Sweet Plantains in Coral Bay.

Ron, maybe he has chartered a private helicopter to fly into St John, which has left him with no money for food or lodging.

You never see a book "USVI on $50 a day". I'm having flashbacks of the Vendor's plaza discussion.

🙁

What made you think it was possible to do the Virgin Islands cheaply? I'm wondering how people are even getting the impression that anywhere in the Caribbean is cheap. Central America, yes. Some parts of Mexico, yes. Some parts of Eastern Europe, yes. But the Virgin Islands??? No way.

You can stay at Inn at Tamarind court in the low season (summer) for $60 a night with a shared bathroom ( 1 person only in the room)

In the off season you can camp at Cinnamon Bay for $58 or $27 if you bring your own tent.

Maho has a $56 rate for single travelers in the off season

St John is not a budget location. Prices are expensive, but you can do it inexpensively (just not cheaply)

You can not fly into St. John. You fly into St. Thomas, take a cab to the ferry dock and hop over on the boat.

Good luck.

How do you get one of those "researcher" permits NPS wants in exchange for the discounted cabin? Otherwise, these are over $100 per night.

Sounds like you have to be a student majoring in Marine Biology or Ecology. There is a POC who can provide more info on that I'm sure.

True, without the NPS discount it's not a less expensive option, but it does sound like an interesting experience.

Perhaps in this day (St. John ~ 1953) you COULD have stayed there on $50 per day!

I found a Villa for $210 a night and thought that was a real good deal!

Camping may be your best option.

I think its funny how people say you can't stay on St John for $50 a day after people have already given options for less than $50 a day. He didn't say $50 a day including everything. Although if you stay at Cinnamon Camp with your own tent and cook Ramen noodles or pasta you'll have money left over for some rum too.

Enjoy and Cinnamon Bay campground is gorgeous and if you don't mind the inconvenience you can hitchhike to avoid renting a car. There is a small convenience store at the camp too.

But yes make sure your flights are into St Thomas. STT

see http://www.cloud9villas.com for a couple of inexpensive lodging options on stj. their Palmello is 2 bedrooms 2 bths, fully equipped and full ac. has hot tub (no pool) and fairly decent stt and sunset views. convenient location just off south shore rd before the climb up gifft hill. book rate is 980 week during off season and regularly have 20-30% off on last minute openings. never stayed their but toured while owners in residence a couple years ago.

their Gardenia is a large studio under palmello fully equipped, ac, hot tub but no view. bride and i stayed there one night when we had to come a day before their villa moonsong was available for us. book rate is 665 wk off season with last minute discounts. if views don't matter, you won't find a better value on the island.

we have stayed in one of the other c9 villas on 4 trips and always found manger, marcie appel, and owners, linda and alan, very courteous and responsive of any problems/questions, and the villas clean and well equipped and stocked.

The original question was "can I find a hotel room for $50 or less"? The answer is no.
