Good evening!

My husband is asking me whether he needs to bring a pair of khaki pants in addition to his shorts. We don't plan to go anywhere formal, just beach-type island restaurants. So, tell me, pants or no pants?

Also, I have found I've packed a lot of black. Is that an island no-no? Thanks a lot for your seasoned advice!

My husband has been wearing a pair of hiking pants on the plane and brings a pair of linen pants. But, this is the one place that he wears shorts most of the time. Still, not a bad idea to have one pair of long pants. Also, he brings black shorts and shirts with black in them. In May we are returning to St. John for our 8th visist and no one has ever complained about his wardrobe. Can't wait to get back.

Also, we bring black shorts and shirts with black in them; and he doesn't seem out of place.

The only time I worn pants while in St. Thomas was when I got married. The rest of the time I wore khaki shorts and TOMs around the island.

I always bring/wear long pants (lightweight cotton). I keep them in my beach bag for those days where I cannot get out of the sun but need to cover up. And, these same pants for those evenings after a long day in the sun when I get chilled because of the sunburn. Don't know if this is a "woman" thing only or if it would extend to men as well.

Since we come from Wisconsin when it's cold we travel in pants. We stay at places that have laundry facilities so we can wash them if needed. I like to wear the ones that zip off at the knee so I can turn them into shorts before I leave the plane and step on island! We have never needed to wear pants while on STJ or STT. My vote is no pants unless you travel in them! Also, you will not need a pair of shorts/skirt for every day that you are there. You will find you may only wear half of what you bring as you are in your swimsuit most of the time!

Black is a staple in my wardrobe as is for many women. I wouldn't worry about it! You can always add pops of color with your accessories!

I also have been wearing hiking pants an the plane, and once I am in the airport, I zip off the bottoms and then am in shorts. Maybe I should start doing this on the plane as you do.

Paige,

I apologize for this but every time I see the subject line I want to say that yes, most of us would appreciate your husband wearing pants while he is here.

Pamela

Don't apologize as you are not the only one who has to smile at the subject line. Since day one I've wanted to come back and say the US VI is not clothing optional (publicly). Thanks for breaking the ice. 😎

Another consideration is long pants help when the mosquito population explodes.
