I know we must now pack bottles of duty free booze in checked luggage, risking breakage and a big mess. Has anyone ever tried putting the booze in empty one liter water bottles that are shatterproof? I would probably pack the empty glass bottles as well for proof of content and to have them to use when you get home. Any TSA agents use this board? I would really like a foolproof solution for this problem.

My husband frequently brings back liquor. He buys them at A.H.Riise in Charlotte Amalie. They pack them for him and we have not had one problem with getting them on the other side. No such thing as fool proof and I would think that they would inspect your bag and not like that you have liquor in a plastic bottle. With all the 'home-made' bomb stuff, that might look more suspicious than it would be understood. Pack the bottles in a cardboard box (not taped shut) and put it in your luggage. They can inspect it and like I said, we have not lost a single bottle. We are almost considered 'rum runners' for all the liquor we have brought back and shared. Ooo, and I just got a bottle of Cruzan's finest black cherry - good in coke.

Edit: My husband said that if you have a direct flight you can check the box of liquor just as the store packs it, by itself. Delta, whom we frequently fly, puts all the boxes in fragile handling area and are very good about having it to pick up at your destination. If you are not flying direct than pack it in the cardboard box and in your luggage for extra security. You should be fine either way.

We just put the bottles into 2 carrying boxes they give you, checked them and we were fine.

MOTD:

I would think doing what you want to do would raise suspicions.......imagine the custom agents finding 6 "unsealed"
bottles of liquid as checked baggage......?????

We've been checking bottles of liquor in the 6 pack boxes (many times) and have not had a problem.

We wrap the bottles in bubble wrap ( K Mart) and write our name and address on the boxes (provided where you buy the liquor). The only time we had any breakage was when we allowed the store to pack the bottles and they put some bottles in upside down. When I got the luggage in PR and had to repack everything in plastic bags I smelled like a pina collida.
Thankfully you clear customs in STT now so that isn't a problem anymore.

Wow, that's an interestng question and idea. Unfortunately, I don't think it would be approved by TSA and you might risk having it all confiscated. There's really no proof that what's in the plastics is from the enclosed glass bottles.

You get the point for "out of the box" thinking, though 🙂

We packed ours in bubble wrap, put in large ziplock bags, placed in cardboard box (they give you these at K-Mart), and placed the whole box in our suitcase wrapped in towels and clothes. All of ours made it home even with an overnight stop in San Juan. Good Luck! KK

KK, I like your plan because it involves redundancy...

bottles...
wrapped in bubble wrap...
enclosed in zip lock bags...
placed in special cardboard shipping boxes...
wrapped in towels...
put in a suitcase...

I like your plan. Thanks!
