We will be heading to STJ for a week+ stay and are planning on renting a vehicle. My husband recently received a handicap placard from the CA DMV. I can't seem to locate a DMV office in STJ to officially ask, but does anyone know if the CA placard will be valid in STJ? On previous trips I've never had a reason to notice, but are there any /many handicap parking spots on STJ?

Thanks for your help!

My wife's handicap placard from CT was honored on STX and STT. I don't think you'll have any problems on STJ.

SuzyQ51,
The answer to your question is going to be ambiguous, After 90days on the island you must turn your stateside license in for a USVI license. Even if you have a placard from CA, you have to reapply for handicap in the USVI, They don't issue placard like the states that hang from your mirror, it's a paper document with the handicap symbol on it that you put on the dashboard of the car. Your only going to be there (STJ) for a week, you rent a car with your Ca license and restrictions (handicap). Now you park your rental car in a handicap spot on STJ place your placard. Then a police officer walks by see"s your placard from CA, he's not sure so he calls the desk. Now it depends who is on the desk at that time, as to what answer the officer is going to get. If the Officer on the desk doesn't Know and " wants to put the effort in"
he calls what you know as the DMV, he gets an answer depending on who is working the phones that day and what time of day it is when they answered the phone. Some of the answers from the DMV could be, we honor other states, have them come down a fill out an application, it's OK, it's not OK, have the officer make an on spot evaluation of the disability, my supervisor is in a meeting, don't you know etc. The VI Code doe's not address placard reciprocity from other states but does recognize a valid driver license from other states for a ninety day period ( so one would think that it's implied that your state side license with restrictions would be valid). This has been my experience on STX, never received a ticket, because the police officer's made an on site decision not the write that day, and all said "better get a VI Handicap ASAP.
Good Luck and have a great Vacation!

I am trying to recall where they even have handicapped spots on STJ, other than at the National Park Beaches, the Marketplace complex, maybe Mongoose Junction and in front of the Police Station. The one in front of the police station is inaccessible as there are always police cars parked there. Cant recall any handicapped spots on the street and I would not depend on parking in a no-parking zone with a Ca handicapped sticker. If it is up to the officer;s judgement, you have to recall that St John is one of the few places where you can get a ticket for not wearing a seat belt, but not for having an open container while driving.
Go figure????
Suggest you rent from a rental agency that allows you to park in their lot.

The only places I really saw handicapped spots was at the beaches and maybe the Marketplace. Parking is just horrendous on STJ. For the most part, your rental car agency's lot will be your best bet (it was for us), however, I guess as it gets busier that tends to be an issue too. It might also be an issue if you have some sort of disability and are trying to walk/wheel up and down that giant hill behind St. John Car Rental. (That's where we rented, but I remember Courtesy's lot seemed to be pretty flat, although none are really wheelchair-accessible, as far as I can tell.)

I do know, however, from my parents that all U.S. states have to honor another state's parking placard. I don't know if this extends to U.S. territories, but I cannot imagine why it wouldn't. When my parents flew to Florida in June, they used their Ohio hang tag in their car with no problems at all.

Thanks Lulu and everyone else that answered! We'll be packing the handicapped placard and are planning to use it as often as possible.

When we were in STT and STJ, our CA placard was on the mirror, never had a problem. The market area's have some handicap spots. Even parked all day while out on a sail, no ticket or problem. Take it and enjoy the islands

BRing your California Sticker, hang it on your mirror and ENJOY. You're not gonna have any problems. Handicap parking is available at the Marketplace, beaches and in town by the customs office across from the Post Office.

Hello SuzyQ51,

You mentioned looking for the St. John DMV contact information and that is the number njoynstj gave. You need to call the Police Station though, the DMV doesn't handle handicap parking permits.

Called the Police Station and the officer that answered said a visitor with stateside handicap parking permit would need to bring it in and apply for a temporary VI handicap parking permit. They didn't have any more details because its an employee from St. Thomas that comes over twice a week (Tues and Thurs 9-3) that handles the parking permits. If you want to ask that employee you'd need to call on those days. Her name is Ms. Boyce and the number is (340) 693-8880.

Hello Lizard,

Yes I read your comments. No harm in pointing SuzyQ51 or anyone else interested in the topic to the right office to officially ask, is there? 😉

You know, for a week's stay, I probably wouldn't bother. If questioned, and assuming I had the right to use it in the states, I would smile, plead ignorance, and apologize for not following the proper procedure.

If I was going to be here for several weeks or months, definintely go get the VI placard.

OK here's the status on a handicap placard issued by any of the 50 States. I was able to reach Ms Boyce at 340 693 8880 after 4 massage's. The 5th time I called I said "I'll wait." Ms Boyce advised me that she doesn't do that, she works in records. Ms Boyce told me to call the Police Chief's Office on St Thomas. I Called The Chief's Office and spoke to a Judith Cotton her number is 340 774 2211. She said How long are you going to be on the island, I told her about 2 weeks, she said I guess you can use your stateside Placard but if you want you can come down to the chiefs office I can give something on a temp basis. I asked if I didn't have the temp would I get a ticket, she said " I don't Know, that depends on the police Officer but I don't think so".
