is renting a car a necessity on st john? Are taxi's readily avialable, or is it more cost effective to rent? Would like to see different beaches for fishing/snorkling.

Hello tbass,

Taxis are readily available in Cruz Bay, at hotels, at popular beaches like Trunk & Cinnamon Bay and to some degree Hawksnest. Otherwise they can be called or arrangments can be made; they are numerous.

Renting a car for at least a few days of your trip will allow you to really explore and beach hop; so I'd recommend it at least for a couple days of your trip if you don't want to rent one for the entire trip.

you can probably rent one for a week for only a few $ more--if any--for what it will cost you to rent one for 3 days. highly rec. renting because of the flexibility it gives you.

We have been to STJ several times and always rented a car once we got onto St John...Our friends told us that it is much cheaper to rent on STT and take car ferry over to STJ. Any one have any feedback on this. A quick check on internet seems to show it being alot less expensive to rent on STT. Please let me know the good and/or bad. Thank You!

Renting on STT will always be cheaper. Just make sure the agency you use will allo you to take it off STT and be prepared not to get any support once on STJ (flat tire, dead battery, etc.). Another advantage to renting on STJ is the use of local agency parkin lot when in Cruz.
