We would like to take our rental car over to St. John on the car ferry from St. Thomas. We want to stay on St. John later than the last car ferry leaves that day. We have a sunset sail out of Coral Bay and we would like to have dinner and enjoy the full moon on St. John. My hope was that we could take the passenger ferry back to St. Thomas that night and pick up the rental car the next day. That next day I planned our other boat trip on the ferry to Jost Van Dyke so we will be stopping in Cruz Bay for customs. We would then pick up the car and take the car ferry back to St. Thomas.

Will this work?

Is there a parking garage or place to leave the car overnight and the next day until we pick it up around 4:00pm?

We are renting our car from Budget - and they do allow us to take it over on the ferry.

There is a new "overnight" parking lot in Cruz Bay - $15.00 I believe - but I'm not sure if it is actually up and running for overnight, but the price has now been added to his rate board so maybe 🙂

Just a suggestion

Not sure what the car ferry cost these days. But you may want to contact one of car rental agencies in STJ and get a daily rate. I know last May we wanted a car for the day on STJ. Checked with Best Car Rental in Cruz http://community.webshots.com/photo/547420835/2431712880082606958HuKMzr (we had used them before) and the price was very reasonable. I want to say $74 for the day.

Then you can drop the car, put the keys in the drop box and catch whatever ferry you want.

I know it sounds crazy because you already have a car. But if you figure in ferry cost - it may not be that crazy.

Tom B - That was my other thought. Whether or not it was worth the hassel of bringing over our rental car for a difference of less than $20 - probably not huh?. By the time you add in the expense of the car ferry and passenger ferry, the extra time it takes, and any parking charge, we should probably just rent a jeep on St. John.

My husband wanted to rent a scooter, which I thought would be fun too, until I read this board about it. First I couldn't find anyone who had reported doing it and how it went. Second the business, Scooters in Paradise, never responded to my email from 10 days ago. Third, everyone scared me about putting my life in grave danger on a scooter with the roads and when it rains etc...so I talked my husband out of it. Our auto insurance doesn't cover us for liability on a scooter either, but it will on an auto, so that was also the real kicker.

Thanks for the link. I'll look into renting an open air jeep on St. John. Probably not as fun as a scooter but safer.

when are you doing this? I notice someone has suggested turnung in STT car for car on STJ. Be sure you CAN get a car on SSJ. We're going with another couple in March who is in charge of the car rental part and they said they exhaused the STJ rentals ...none to be had so we're forced to rent on STT and bring to SST.

I also found that I can not make a reservation for just a one day rental on St. John. We are going in April which is a busy time so I think it will be just a matter of luck. A couple of places said to call them a day or two ahead and they may have something. Otherwise we may go back to our original plan and rent the scooter.

I just got a tip from another board member Scooby. Varlack-Ventures will take a reservation for a one day car rental. 340-776-6412 They also have a great web site with lots of information on it.

Their rental rate went up to $70 for the Vitara but I still thinks it is worth it not to have to deal with the car ferry and overnight parking.
