My husband and I will be on STT in Feb.'11 for a month. Can you help us find a reasonably priced location to rent a jeep. I have checked with Discount Car Rentals, the price was $1,900. Ouch! could that be normal? Budgets website estimated nearly $1,600. I have an e-mail sent out to them and also Dependable Car requesting quotes. Who else may rent on the island ? Thanks!

Call Amalie Car Rental -- the best in the business IMO -- just returned from a 1 week stay on St. John and rented a Jeep from them at the airport (met us at baggage claim) -- brand new Jeep with 20 miles on the odometer -- allowed us to take the Jeep to St. John via the ferry, etc., and were first class all the way. Their office is 1 mile from STT -- 888-568-3535. Do a google on AmalieCar dot com and email for quotes.

Highly recommended by numerous bloggers and was extremely satisfied.

We own a place down here and always rent vehicles when we come. We have gotten some great deals from different rental companies, but not in High Season. The cars get rented anyway so they don't need to give a discount. If you are staying someplace on the beach you could do what we do. We stock up, stay home with no car for a week. The next week we'll have a car and go out every night and over to St. John. It works well for us.

I guess the question is.....do you really need a Jeep?

I just checked at Hertz....Compact Car (Monthly Charge (Feb 1, through Mar 1)) $689.76 + fees = $908. (includes a AAA 10% discount).

However, you can not bring a Hertz car over to St. John. You can check the other national brands, but I don't think they have monthly rates.

I got a similar price ,$682, with Budget when I book thru the national website and it can be taken to STJ. ( i booked immediately!) But if I put the same dates into Budget thru STT website I get a price of $1,600. This concerns me. I have a confirmation # with the $682. price. Good enough? We are staying away from the beach (fab views) so we feel we're gonna want transportation. That was a great suggestion by Sapphire Beach 08 tho. May have to consider it if they don't honor our reservastion price at Budget. Thanks for the names of local rental companies. I'm getting so excited ... we've been there many times but never for a month!

I would seriously question the if the Budget on STT will honor that rate. February is HIGH season and cars are at a premium.

I have not had good luck with the local rental car companies......after leaving messages, only one out of three called me back....and that person was almost laughing when I asked for a monthly rate. His comment was...."why would I rent you a car for $600/month when I can get $400/week?"

I tried Avis & Budget, but couldn't get a reasonable monthly rate, either.
