What are these months like? We're thinking of getting back down next summer. What really is the difference? The crowds? Weather? Thanks!

The weather is "normal" (hurricane season has little effect, if any, until August) and the beginning of slow season starts around end of July. The reduction in tourists during the summer has less to do with hurricane season than with the fact that it's "summer" on the mainland.

Gari Ann,
We were there in the middle of June and had great weather. It didn't seem as humid as when we were there in March/April. Maybe I was more used to the humidity because of it being summer in IL.

GAIT:

I spent a week in late June (2004) on STT. It was a little warmer than January/February...about 10-15 degrees (high 80's low 90's). Most of the time I was without AC since I was working on our condo and the AC unit was broken. However, being on the East End there was always a comfortable breeze.

It was less crowded than January, February and March.

So far I've been to STT during the months of Jan, Feb, March, April, June, Sep, Oct and (early) Dec.

Hope this helps.

F.I.

The crowds on St. Croix were less - but the water, to me, is best in the summer - very clear, much calmer, and comfortably cool. It's pretty hot at sea level, but the breezes stay nice on up higher...my favorite time was/is the summer...the water is too cold in Jan., Feb., and March!

To me, late June and July are the best months. Flambuoyant trees are in bloom, mangoes scent the air and are plentiful, there's the STJ carnival, STX mango melee, STX leatherback turtle watches, lower prices in stores and hotels, less crowded. The only drawback is there may be fewer activies or they're scheduled less frequently.

Gari Ann:

Locals have told us the ocean is calmer as mentioned by BeckyR so that makes for great snorkeling.

We've made trips in April, May, June, July. Last summer, we spent the first two weeks of July on STX. All of our other trips have been to STJ. The fresh local mangos & papayas are seem to be "in" season in June/July. We are avid snorkelers, so STJ is our favorite.

This year we were on STJ the last week of May/first week of June and the water was almost as smooth as glass--the Atlantic side only had two foot swells during our stay. If you are happy with the ocean and a nice sand beach, STX was excellent. . .and the cost of items is less on STX than STJ. We went to STX last year for cost savings. The summer months are less crowded compared to the "season". Go and enjoy!

Liz

We have been in June and July, preferring that time of year. Both take advantage of the low season rates and smaller numbers but the weather is similar all year round. If you can, try for later June and try to take in some of the STJ Carnival celebrations (end on July 4). You really get a taste for the life on STJ rather than just the beaches and bars. This July seemed to be hazier than past trips so I am not sure if the Sahara sands came early or my memory late? 🙂

We've only been to STJ in February/March and in June. We loved June so much that we booked it again for our next trip. We go for the calm ocean conditions so May/June is mostly ideal for that. We also actually try to avoid the full moons due to stronger ocean currents a few days before and after. We're water babies and want optimal snorkeling if possible!

We have been going to STJ for the past 5 years, so I guess that right there tells ya something LOL.. Although this year was a little different compared to others. I thought the water was a bit cooler, and the weather was a tad bit on the undecided side of what it wanted to do. We then were told that there was a wave that came off of the Africa coast that had caused a day or so of not great weather, also something about the dust from the Sahara Desert (sorry didnt catch the whole conversation, well not as much as my mom did)..
