Has anyone stayed at La Mer, the four bedroom on Bourdeaux? I'm close to booking Great Turtle Villa, but Laura from Destination St. John just showed me this house. It seems incredible, and she says the views are to die for, but the photos of the inside of the house are a bit grainy. The description of it makes it sound great though. Any feedback?

Thanks everyone for all your help!

Craig the views do look incredible. Wow, what a drive you'd have up that driveway :o)

Are you going with other couples? If you are, you should all sit down and take a vote and just book it. This must be driving you nuts!

The views from La Mer (I never understood its gender) are breathtaking approaching vertiginous with as good a view of the Sir Francis Drake Passage as any on STJ. It is so high and so steep (you approach from Coral Bay, not Bordeaux Mountain Road), with among the toughest driveways on the island, just keep the car in 4wheel till you reach the bottom.

Quirky villa. Just OK pool. Early shade.

Haha, thanks, Connie. I think that's what we're going to do. I must be driving you guys crazy as well!

Thanks, MLS. Is the driveway really that terrifying? How are the furnishings/interior of the place? The pictures are quite grainy on the Destination website. How long is the drive from the main road up to the villa? Thanks for your help.

La Mer is the top house on the hill, so as you look up from the little shopping center at the bottom of the hill, it is the uppermost building. My family says we have been up tougher driveways, but i'm not so sure. Actually the driveway is steeply sloped down after the road peaks. I don't think I'd even try backing out the driveway if it were wet. 10 harrowing minutes-it's only a couple hundred yards.

The furnishing are high quality, artsy, edgy with lots of African tribal touches. Bathrooms/showers also unique. Not at all ordinary-quirky. I loved it; other family members thought the decorating to be odd, not islandy.

I have been there three times and it is great.

The photos do no justice to the place. The view from about 750 ft up the mountain are some of the best in the USVI.

Before I stayed in one of their villas a few weeks ago, someone had told me that the photos on Destination St. John's Web site rarely do the houses justice. I know that our villa was even more beautiful in real life than it was on the Web site. Based on the reviews of this villa, I'd say that's probably true.

Let us know what you decide.
