We leave for our first trip to St. John on Saturday. I am counting not only the days, but the minutes as well. It is my wife's birthday and she doesn't know where we are going. I rented a villa in the Gift Hill area. Here are my final questions.

1) Are Teva's OK for hiking on St. John or do I need hiking shoes? I don't see us doing anything more strenous than Reef Bay and Ram's Head.

2) I booked Tage for dinner one night and that is the only place I have reservedd (other than some minimal provisioning the first night). Is Lime Inn on Wednesday worth it or is somewhere else better? Money isn't that big of a concern (unless it is completely out of sight), but I also have had some of my best meals at "dives." We will have already sailed with Capt. Phil on Wednesday.

3) Should I bring my laptop or not? I like to check the news and weather, but I also like to travel light. I know there are a few places where I can go to get the internet and check my e-mail (hopefully with a beer in my hand).

4) Any other things I must bring (I have the neat sheet already packed)?

Thanks in advance

1) Teva's are just fine for hiking. I use them all the time.
2) Tage's food is excellant, Ted the chef is a little tempermental, we won't do any substitutes. Lime Inn is okay and the atmosphere is good. Zozo's has a great sunset view and the food is one of the best on the island. The tamarind has a Thai night on Tuesday which is good and that is on the lower end of the budget scale. You will enjoy Captain Phil..tell him Maddie said "woof woof"

3) you can check mail at the quiet mon pub..and it is a great spot for people watching. Also Connections in town has internet access. Not to worry you can take a beer anyplace even drive with it but make sure you have a shirt on...

4) an enjoyment for life!!

have fun.

Maddie has already answered your questions but I do have a word of advice.

It's your wife's birthday (nice surprise by the way) and you're on STJ. Do the right thing and forget the news & weather (can't do anything about either). Leave the laptop at home. Then you don't have to hassle with it at the airport either!

Hello Lance,

Tevas are ok, but make sure they are comfy, already broken in. I wore a relatively new pair to hike the Lameshur to Reef Bay Trail and ended up with terriable blisters on my feet. I wear strickly sneakers to hike now (yes it was that bad that I won't try Tevas or sandals again). Hiking shoes or boots aren't necessary.

We have a packing check list that might help you out, take a look https://www.vinow.com/general_usvi/more_info/traveltips/.

Bring a book you've been wanting to read rather than your lap top. 😉 You can stop in at an internet cafe and take a quick look at your e-mail/news etc.

Have a great time.

We loved 10 tables. Chef Scott Bryan was voted Chef 2005!
Don't forget to save room for desert...Blueberry Bread Pudding with carmel and chocolate sauce.

We celebrated our Anniversary dinner there and my husband told the waitress and with our desert she put a sparkle candle on it. Great service. Be sure to get a table near the railing, for a beautiful sunset.

My husband had the lamb and he really enjoyed it. The pudding and lamb are his signature specials.

Leave the laptop at home. Sneakers are fine to hike in.

If you get a chance to go to STT have lunch at Cuzzins. Great island food.

So close to BVI, take a boat excursion.

Enjoy, and i'm so jealous, USVI is my favorite islands.

Be sure to write a review when you get back.

1. I am with Islander- walking/running type shoes for the extra protection and support!
2. Tage is wonderful. I also like Zozo's.
3. (Standing on soapbox) If you are on vacation, celebrating a special day and going somewhere to get away from it all, why not just leave the 21st century devices back in Big America and remember what life was like when people had face-to-face conversations.
4. Twice the money and half the stuff...
