I love this board! I'm making my first trip to STJ in March and am SO excited! I like to travel light, but a real incentive on this trip because "complimentary" baggage on my flight is 30 pounds. I envision myself relaxing on the beach(es) with a good book. Is there a library in STJ where visitors can check out books?

Thanks.

here is the link for the vi library system... although i believe that like in other systems, one must be able to prove residency to receive a card...

Anita,

You were right -- only residents can check books out of the library. Visitors are welcome in the library and can use materials within the building, but cannot check items out. Web access is available for vistitors at the rate of $2.00 per hour. I used the website you provided to contact the librarian.

Looks like I will have to bring my beach reading material along with me.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not a good reader on vacation. I spend too much time looking up, being nosy and seeing what everyone else is doing on the beach. My friend however, can read through a tornado and needs several books to get her through two weeks, taking up lots of precious luggage space (and weight). Her solution was to buy a kindle. She carries many books around with her now in a tiny little electronic device. She absolutely loves it when travelling.

On St. John, there are a few places where you can pick up books for free. Ronnie's Pizza has a lending library and so does Larry's Landing. There are a few over at Deli Grotto as well. We also have a bookstore with used books in the Marketplace 1st level (they've really put a dent in the lending libraries!!).

book redistribution is a good thing too... if you bring books down, leave them on a free bookshelf! or, pick one up, keep it or read it and return it. that's always a nice option. we have a couple places like that here on st thomas also. good point stjohnjulie!

and, while i enjoy turning pages (call me old-fashioned), i know folks who swear by the kindle! thanks gerie!

I have Kindle and love it, it fits in my pocket book and weights 1 lb., it is a space safer and very easy to travel with.

I never thought I would like a Kindle -- just thought the experience wouldn't be like holding a book, didn't think I'd enjoy reading from a screen. However, packing for this trip has made me think twice. I'm definitely going to be looking into getting one. Not sure I have time and budget to get one before this trip, though. I appreciate all the suggestions.
