Headin back down in June, this time with the family and would like to find some places that are low key and down to earth places to eat near Red Hook. Its been since the early 90s since I worked around there for a few months and would like to show the Family the islands. Have a good one.

I'm not sure what you mean by low key, but I'm assuming you mean a somewhat quieter restaurant. I like XO's and Off The Hook.

Cariga's (old Bottoms Up) is about as low key as you can get. Boaties at the bar and all. I think they are trying to legislate out boaties, but they are still around! 😉

Try, Ainsley's at the Elysian, Latitude 18, Blue Moon Cafe, just to name a couple (three). Enjoy your trip.

Reading the original post and the mention of "with the family" my first thought was of places that were not upscale, places that the kids would like, and places that might be a little less expensive considering the cost of feeding a family. In Red Hook and the surrounding area I suggest Duffy's and Molly Malone's. A taste test for the Best Burgers in Paradise conducted by the 14 year old with us rated Duffy's second (but I thought they were the best.) Fungi's at Point Pleasant is a good casual West Indian place right on the water. I haven't been to Ainsley's but from it's description it's also in the same category, as is Latitude 18. If you'll have a car to venture out of the area, Iggie's at Bolongo Bay has a good buffet and Caribbean show on Wednesday nights. Our kids liked that. If you can get downtown to the Greenhouse the family might enjoy a dinner of appetizers on their appetizer special night. Order up a bunch of different ones and sample off all the plates. The kids had fun with that, too. No veggies!!!!!

Still going on the assumption that you want something appealing to children and not breaking the bank, be warned that Cokes and other sodas are not cheap. Our 14 year old boy would go through a glass before he even ordered. You pay for each refill. Sometimes the drink bill seemed higher than the food bill. Usually iced teas and lemonades have free refills.

East Ender--What did you mean by legislating out the boaties. I assume boaties are folks who live aboard their boats?

Vote for Carigas! Xo a close second. Duffy's a fine third.

What I mean is that in the 1990s, when the poster lived here, there were lots of places where the live aboard boaters and visitors could meet and mingle. The new restaurants seem to be more and more upscale- from the old East Coast to the East End Cafe, for example. Because Cariga's is in a boat yard, it has a certain ambiance (but good burgers, tacos and wine.)

Thanks for the info. As far as low key I mean a place you can be comfortable not a place that's stuffy or were you get food the size of a quarter and pay $50 a person. Just local hang outs. My two kids eat everything and anything. Just trying to be laid back and enjoy.
Thanks again to all and I will have to check out some of the places mentioned. I heard of Duffys before so that will be one on the list.
If anyone know about a place to eat not to far from the ferry dock in St.Johns were a pretty blond use to own it and run it back in the 90's , just wanted to see if it is still around or if she was still around.LOL
Have a good one.

I'd second the Caribbean Saloon. The hot wings are my 13 year old son's favorite, the sandwiches are excellent. You can view their menu at www.caribbeansaloon.com.

Hey Molly thanks for the website. From the photos it looks like a fun place to have a cold one and Nachos for me and Wings for the wife.
Thanks

Rich,

Glad that I could be of help. They also have a Subway in Redhook, another favorite for the kid's. We'd swing by and pack a cooler for the day. Another tip, even though we'd take the kid's for dinner and stock our place with provisions, they always seem to get the munchies at around 10:00 PM. Thank goodness for Senor Pizza, they deliver!
