Would I be happy staying at this hotel for two days after a cruise? My husband and I enjoyed Hotel 1829 but want to try another property. We are looking for a decent , small hotel in Charlotte Amalie, convenient to shopping, with a nice view.

Thank you--Liz

Try Crystal Palace in CA. I understand Ronnie is a great host.

There is a poster on this forum named "Captain Jay" who stays at Mafolie frequently, and really likes it. Do a search of his name and read his trip reports, or send him a private message and ask his opinion. He highly recommends it.

We stayed there for one night last month before heading to St. John for one glorious week.

Basically, I gave it a three out of five stars. As far as I'm concerned, after coming off a cruise, staying anywhere that isn't packed with people is a treat.

Pros: The Serta mattress is extremely comfortable. The room (109) was large enough for our family of four, two adults, two kids, to not bump into each other constantly. The view is beautiful. I hear the restaurant is top notch, but we couldn't find out since we arrived on Tuesday and the restaurant isn't open Tuesday at the hotel.

Cons: Extremely noisy - it's a month later and I think, "ARRRGHHHH!" when I think about trying to sleep past 5:30 a.m. The room we stayed at actually has a GAP between the roof and the wall in the corner of the room. Granted, it's covered in wire mesh or something to keep the critters out, but the noise was unbearable. Since it's at the top of a hill, you hear lots of loud cars and trucks trying to get up the hill. Also, the roosters crowed at the ungodliest hour of 5: something...

The breakfast was very basic. This could be a good thing after pigging out onboard a cruise ship for a week (we did the same last year so that's not intended as a diss!). Expect basic breads and a toaster with coffee/tea/milk and you won't be disappointed.

The people there were friendly. Owner was nice and the front desk clerk was awesome.

Hope it helps!

Yes we have stayed there several times as Mountaineer Girl said. We usually stay for a day or two prior to a charter. It is a clean safe and budge priced, by St Thomas standards. They do have an awesome restaurant with million dollar views. It is very convenient to downtown for shopping etc. They have a free shuttle that will run you downtown in the morning. The rooms are clean and well kept but they are older. As Bimini Dr said it can be noisy the main road up and down the mountain runs below it on the hill. The roosters will be an issue anywhere in the area its one of those weird little things you get used to. They also have a pool and a pool bar with some food available at lunch time. The breakfast will definitely not be what you are used to after a cruise but it might be a good way to get back to reality food wise.
Hope this helps.
Jay

The view from Mafolie is spectacular. On a clear day you can see PR and STX from the restaurant. I took a picture there that I have as my wall paper on my computer.

We stay there for at least a couple of nights every year. As stated, it is a friendly, family-owned property with a basic continental breakfast, older but clean rooms and a view that will be remembered forever. It can get noisy with the morning traffic so if sleeping-in is important, you might consider other options. The pool area is a great place to spend an evening (spend the morning and afternoon at a beach!) sipping a cocktail and watching the ships.

We'll be back October 30 and 31 before heading to St. John for 5 nights in a condo.

Good Luck! Have Fun!
